Just installed our second Mr Cool DIY 24k heat pump and couldn't be more happy. I guess it's the bigger brother to this 12k BTU deal. Cost was around $1500 for each unit, plus $100-150 in parts. Yes, I put in proper 240v electrical disconnects. I even installed additional vinyl line guards on the outdoor unit as well. Seems to be a really good value for someone with DIY experience (or has a friend with skills). Our first unit is going on 2 and a half years old and runs like the day it was new. I did my very best effor to make them look like a real pro did installations. The new one does have a coil of line set behind the condensor unit. Not a big deal to me. These save a LOT on electricity compared to our two decade old centeral A/C. I put a clamp meter on the power wires at the disconnect and couldn't believe how much less current they draw. The variable speed is amazing. Any both the inside and outside unit are very quiet. I would definitely do it again.

For all the negative comments from the HVAC / Electrical contractors-- unfortunately yes, you're getting cut out of work and revenue and you shouldn't have to work on my unit if you don't want to. I appreciate your industry, your knowledge & experience, and I would absolutely go with a professionally installed unit if I could afford it. Our local HVAC company quoted us $17k to upgrade our 22 year old central system (it still works, but obviously it's getting old). They also wanted almost $7k+ to install a 24k BTU mini-split. I'm sure this is all chump change for some, but I just don't make that kind of money.

. I'm thousands ahead by doing this myself. When my two units do fail or wear out they will most likely be repaired or replaced by ME. If I had to guess, I'd say the indoor unit's fan bearings will be the first thing that needs replaced, followed by the outside fan bearings. I'm up for the challenge when it happens.

You're mistaken. Many of us with wealth DIY. Million dollar house and contractors see "wealth" and try to charge crazy rates.

I mean the disconnect is literally just for the service tech to easily be able to disconnect power to service. What's the difference if instead its just plugged into a 120v exterior outlet and you just unplug it? I believe it probably does need a disconnect to be up to code though.

The negative for the DIy unit is the copper tubing. There can be multiple "loops" left over and is not a good and finished look for Your $600K home. Ok for a rental duplex.

As a hvac service tech, I hope none of you guys call me for service. With people talking about not putting in a disconnect box.

What size area would this unit be able to heat or cool. I have basement without duct work and I am thinking of installing this unit for heating, especially as it gets about 57F in winter

Does anyone know how long Costco will have these on sale? Considering getting a membership for the 24k unit. Thanks!

They go on sale frequently, run a search here. There's some sale on one version or another of these things at Costco probably every other month. You might have to wait for the 24k but it will show up on sale soon.

Can anyone who has applied for the rebate successfully give a like or reply to this comment? I just ordered one and it looks as if a tax form must be completed and sent in with your tax return to receive a $300 credit. Is this correct? Thanks in advance.
