Very tempting, considering I still have a $50 of $500 coupon to use. Need a penny filler though, lol. Was looking at picking up another Acer Swift 3 which I got at Costco last year for $499 but it has been out of stock lately. This seems to top that one. Worried about the hinge however which seems to plague Lenovo.

Not a techie. Am I understanding correctly that 12MB RAM is the max this laptop can get?

Seems like it. 12gb is better than the standard 8gb we all get do upset at seeing on otherwise-decent buffet laptops - esp. for dealing with memory-hungry programs like Chrome. But it's not at all the optimal setup for a Ryzen CPU. They love true dual-channel RAM, and this doesn't offer that. For $500 with a Costco warranty, it will still make a lot of undemanding users happy.

Not true. Only one stick 4GB is soldered. Read the other comments. So no dual channel over 8GB (edit thanks to OP), but you can swap out the 2nd stick of 8GB to what you want.Still get only 8GB in dual channel. Wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me.

How does this compare to the current IdeaPad 5 at Costco?

https://www.costco.com/lenovo-ideapad-5-15.6%22-touchscreen-laptop---11th-gen-intel-core-i7-1165g7---1080p.product.100745160.html

Only differences I see are:
  • 11th Gen Intel Core i7 vs Ryzen 5
  • Wifi 6 vs 802.11
  • $699 vs 499
I am not a heavy gamer and use computer for work (spreadsheets, PPT, etc.) I dont believe I have a Wifi 6 router but if I purchased the 5 I would look into upgrading.

Is i7 and Wifi 6 worth $200?

My Dad just wants something fast and able to do web-browsing, Office, etc.

This IdeaPad 3 has a brighter display at 300 nits vs. the IdeaPad 5 at 250.

As for CPU, unless you do heavy Excel work, for example 30-50mb+ spreadsheets with hundreds of thousands of rows of data and calculations, the cpu won't matter much as they're all incredibly fast compared to 5+ years ago.

Wifi-AC is still great compared to most people's home Wifi and Internet provider speeds, so Wifi-AX (aka Wifi-6) isn't a big deal yet, if it does become an issue, you can buy an AX Wifi card for this for about $20 and put it in yourself.

^^^ Partially THIS.

It actually is dual-channel, but only 8gb (4gb soldered + 4gb of the 8gb stick) will operate in dual channel mode. This has been well discussed in multiple threads where laptops have 4gb or 8gb of soldered memory, and people were wondering what the computer would do if they put a 16gb or 32gb memory stick in the open slot. Any additional memory used over 8gb will operate as single-channel, still pretty fast.

While Lenovo says the limit is 12GB, this also has an asterisk saying it was limited by their technology. This is a strange statement from Lenovo, but adding to what another user said, as long as the motherboard has a sodimm memory slot, and it appears that this one does, it's highly likely the motherboard can handle at least a 16gb stick if not a 32gb stick, for a total of 20gb or 40gb.

Edited:

My coupon was expired.

I called costco.com customer support and they were able to honor the discount.

Thank you for helping!

I tried using the $50 off coupon and got an error. Went back and read the fine print... not valid with any other offers or promotions.

PLEASE let me know if you get it to work.

"Only valid on Costco.com. Not valid in warehouse. One coupon code per Costco member. Ineligible purchases include: new Costco memberships, Costco membership renewals, gift of membership, Costco Shop cards, custom installation services, Same-day grocery delivery, and online-digital print orders. Not valid for orders at the online Pharmacy, Costco Travel or Costco Business Delivery. The merchandise total in your cart must equal $500 or more before tax and shipping to receive the $50 off. The coupon code must be entered in the promo code box at checkout to be valid. This offer may not be combined with any other offer or promotion. Offer expires 7/25/21"
Hmm, I haven't tried yet. Did you add a filler to get over $500?

Yes. I added a polo that was $10.00.
With WFH, on camera it still looks like every other polo. Applause LOL

Cheers.

That's why I said _true_ dual channel. Isn't the 4gb stick the soldered one? You'll never have better than 2x4 in dual-channel, plus more in single channel for resource-heavy programs. But it's not "almost as good as" 2x8gb sticks, which is the sweet spot for now and the near future, IMHO.
