  • UNIVERSALLY COMPATIBLE: This air conditioner, furnace and HVAC filter works with almost any brand. It is comparable to the 3M Filtrete MPR 600 Dust & Pollen, Filterbuy AFB Silver and the Honeywell FPR 5 models.
  • CREATE A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT: Entrap airborne particles that bring harm to you and your loved ones with our Merv 8 pleated air filters that capture dust, lint and pollen. Nominal Size: 14x25x1, Actual size is: 13 ¾" x 24 ¾" x ¾"
  • LONG-LASTING PERFORMANCE: Thanks to the thick build and pleated design, our air conditioner filter offers better capture coverage to trap more unwanted air particles and provides resilient filtration for up to 3 months to let only clean air pass through
  • EASY & SIMPLE TO USE: Installing or replacing our air filters for AC units or furnace is as simple as it gets. Simply slide the filter into the air filter return of your unit and you're done! It's recommended to change your filters every 90 days to maintain optimal filtration

Depends on the specific filter. 3M add more pleats which means more filter area.

The MERV 13 in the 3M brand has a lower pressure drop (air flow resistance) than their MERV 5, 7, 11, and 12.

3M MERV 5 - 0.23 pressure drop
3M MERV 7 - 0.24 pressure drop
3M MERV 11 - 0.23 pressure drop
3M MERV 12 - 0.22 pressure drop
3M MERV 13 - 0.19 pressure drop

It really depends on the HVAC system and what it's designed for. Lower end and older ones are typically not built to handle the higher MERV filters. Newer and better ones are built to handle it without issue, though. For example, my HVAC air handler has a sticker on it that specifically says:

Out of stock in my area for all stores and no shipping.
They are in stock in my area and I went to grab some but after looking at them I decided otherwise. There is more structural integrity in a Post-It Note, and the pleats are almost non-existent. Waste of money.

Iv'e switched to Honewell FC40R Return Grille Filter MERV 10
initial pressure drop of 0.12 in WC at 2 CFM per sq. inch.

4 inch filter that fits in a 1 inch return grille(pretty clever) and dont have to change every month Applause

I have used these where I can.

In my shop the installer transitioned from a 20x30 to a smaller maybe 20x20 duct very quickly with sheet metal so the back of these hit the duct.

Luckily it is a shop and the looks don't matter so I throw a "normal" 2" 20x30 filter where a 1" goes and just take off the pretty cover. :-)

I can't find "normal" 4" 20x30 anywhere though. Booo!

So I added a second return in the ductwork running up 12' to the unit at the ceiling. Now I can let both filters get extra dirty before changing them since there is airflow through two of them.

Makes sense that higher MERV# chokes the AC but also keeps out small particles from recirculating-- that said what's the recommended "right" amount of balance of cleaning the return air vs not stressing the central air?

I've been using MERV 11 for 25+ years on the same AC. Curious what the experts say.
Walmart still carries them and they are cheap. Less than a buck a piece for most sizes in 4 packs. Flanders makes them. Use them extensively over the past 10 years never had issues and almost no pressure drop. Yes they may filter less but they still end up plenty dirty. Replace them every two months and had no issues.

Oh I never said they filter much, We change ours and they do get dirty so they are catching something, certainly wouldn't suggest using them as anything than basic dust catchers. I was responding to the individual who was asking about buying them. I'm actually more of a fan of the 4" inserts you can change yearly and are honestly the best all around solution if you can use them
