A7c has much better AF and a fully articulating LCD. They share the same sensor, so IQ is the same. The a7iii has better ergonomics, dual memory slots and a better EVF. I picked the A7c.

As someone who switched from Canon to Sony by getting the A7iii and then later picked up the A7Riii, I have to say, for all the mud slinging going on here regarding the UI and from the Canon forums before I made the switch, it's really a non issue. You literally need 20-30 minutes to set up and customize "My Menu" and the Fn select buttons and custom buttons for your flow, and you never need to touch it again. It becomes second nature.

12MP is not a bug, it's a feature.

The camera is primarily designed for video, even though it has the full suite of Sony's still photography features.

Video has a far higher data processing requirements than stills. The higher the resolution, the more data that needs to be processed. The higher the data processing requirements, the more heat is created and the greater battery requirements.

The A7S III is a native 4K camera. For most video imagery, the camera is 4K in and 4K out. Most full frame cameras with more than 10 or 12MP resolution have to greatly degrade the image quality in order to record 4K video. They either crop in using only the center portion of the sensor, or throw away light that hits the sensor with pixel or line binning.

The A7S III uses the full readout of the sensor, and as native 4K, has low image processing overhead, creating low amounts of heat, resulting in long battery life, while not needing an internal fan. It has fast imaging pipeline, so provides low rolling shutter. And with it's comparatively massive sensels / photosites (image sensor pixels), provides exception low light capability. None of that would be possible in a similarly sized camera with a higher resolution sensor.

Pro stills photographers have compared the stills photos from the A7S III to Sony's higher resolution cameras. It's generally impossible to tell the difference unless pixel peeping or looking at poster sized enlargements. A number of photographers who largely deliver Facebook, Twitter, and other digital deliverables use the camera for both video and stills.

TLDR - 12MP is perfect for 4K video, making for higher quality video imagery in a small lightweight package. And if the photos are used for digital delivery, provides outstanding stills quality as well.

Can someone please post Adorama screenshots of the Edu prices on the 20mm F/1.8 and NP-FZ100 battery? Trying for a price match, but don't have Adorama Edu.
B&H has the same price now.

We want to purchase a new full-frame camera and we want the better tool for our specific budget/desires. should we discuss value-for-$XYZ / A-vs-B, or go ini-mini-miny-mo ?

.
There's very little need for most features for most photos taken. Hence the dominance of smartphone cameras, they get the job done. I have a full frame Sony with 7 lenses and multiple parametric and pixel editors, but that doesn't mean someone couldn't take better shots than me with smaller sensors, fixed lenses, and less manual control without post processing. Image quality concerns are fairly minimal at this point of computational photography. All we need are good compositions, so the idea that a brand new body with absolutely every feature taken to the nth degree is a bit much. I don't know if cat pictures need to be taken 30 fps at 60 mp uncompressed raws with eye tracking enabled.

Get whatever you want, but if you weren't making a living off the images nobody should particularly care about your kit. It isn't impacting the success of anyone's business, advertising, or events, so it isn't much to brag about it concern yourself with. Most people into cameras are more about specs than about shooting. Which is fine, but it isn't the same thing and doesn't need the same selection criteria.

Maybe it seems like a job with an end-goal to you. We decide how we want to enjoy this (and any other) hobby with which tool at any given time. And yes, we need animal eye-af with RTT/ +11fps for our cats in action. Same with 4k/60fps (too bad a7c is only 30 so you know we are in line for future upgrade). Get a better cat.

Based on someone's tip I emailed them yesterday for the price match, which they got around to few hours ago. But they have ship fee, and even though I don't have their taboo thing, I'd rather use a card with better warranty benefits than save tax.

Man you guys are harsh on the A7 III acting like it's some old POS or something. It's still a great camera, and I doubt the 7C is clearly better. The A7 III is already a small camera but the A7C is tiny - which might be what you're going for, but to me I want that extra space to grip the camera, the extra physical controls from the bigger body. The a7C is amazing for compactness, but you really need to be using a small prime to capitalize on that, otherwise you're going to have a big full frame lens on a small body, where the advantage of the small size is mitigated, but you'll be losing out on the extra grip and physical controls of the A7 III. It's really a preference thing. You should try playing around with them at a store before you decide which to buy.

I would be surprised if the A7C had noticibly better autofocus than the A7 III because the A7 III's autofocus is amazing, it basically has never failed me (in somewhat limited use), so it would be hard to improve on that.

When you factor in the size of the full frame lens, the size of the body isn't that different between the two and the A7 III is going to feel like a beefier camera with better control. Not that I'm knocking the A7C, it's very cool.

What?! Since when did B&H start charging tax in FL?! This sucks! I got EDU approved on Adorama and noticed they were charging tax so I hopped over and got approved on B&H because I know they don't usually charge tax and then BAM! Extra $110 onto the bill! Kills the deal. Anyway around this?

a7iii is excellent, including AF. but it wont be getting RealTimeTracking of a7c. no one said a7c is replacement for a7iii, just a diff option. they are functionally & economically similar, thus folks needing one have to make a $1500 choice they have to live with. Plus the chance of a7iv landing in next 6-8 months makes it a bit more convoluted for some leaning towards a7iii.

since 2021. and they charge shipping too. they do advertise their "payboo" creditcard as a means to get tax refunded, but i'd rather purchase on a better credit card with warranty benefits.

Most orders over $50 ship free, though there is shipping on some special order items.

And while the warranty benefits on some CCs are good, would rather save the tax on nearly all items, especially lenses.

Yes, get their credit card which will remove the cost of sales tax from the purchase.

Since tax killed the Adorama + B&H a7C deal, I ended up going to green toe and they accepted $1590 so much better than this (nearly $1,700 with tax!)

I thought the A7iv is arriving next month?
