Have the same charger too. I no longer use the single charger ones that come with some of their tools. Having an all in one charging hub is the easiest option and takes up less space than all the single chargers.

I've seen the Ryobi P118B go for $14 and less shipped on eBay recently. People buy combo kits (for personal use or battery/tool resale) and end up with a bunch of these essentially new chargers "removed from kit" they get rid of for relatively cheap. These are 2A chargers so they take around 2 hours to charge a 4Ah battery from 0% to 100%. The older, dock style P118 and the newer PCG002 cost a little more.

Standard batteries and not the High Performance line, it is difficult to find the deal in these when Two 4amp batteries and charger have been $50 net during Ryobi Days ----that happens once or twice each year for the past couple years.

In comparison, you would have SIX 4amp batteries and Three chargers for the same money, which we did for the more reasonable than the competition Ryobi work lights that net about $50 each.

Note: That six post charger is sequential in charging one at a time and why I prefer individual chargers for multiple batteries that are already slow in comparison to other brands. If it would charge all six at the same time, that would be different.

The ideal way is to just get one included in kit with a tool from a Slickdeal. If not, go to fleabay, craigslist, offerup.

Those 6 port chargers only charge one battery at a time, so I'd rather have multiple small ones.
Plus if the charger dies(and they have) or I loan a tool out to the neighbors, I've still got spares.

Also you can take apart the old single chargers and make faster power wheels for the kids once you buy the adapter.

Is this a good way to jump on the Ryobi line (I have none at the moment, but want a few odd things), or I would be better off buying a tool on a deal with an HP battery?

It depends on your use. I have this combo (2 4ah and 2 2ah batteries) just from my collections, but I only have a single charger. The 4ah are nice because you can check how much juice is left. For the 2ah, I just use them till they die and then recharge. And I have the hedge trimmer, leaf blower, drill, circular & reciprocating saw, and a bunch of other tools. The hedge trimmer and leaf blower probably drain batteries the fastest, but I can even get my entire yard done with the hedge trimmer on a fully charged 2ah battery. Everything else last me a long time with a full charge.

So, even with 4 batteries and over 12 tools, I am good with a single charger.

If you want the 6 port charger, you can keep an eye out for one of DTO's sales. Right now it is only $10 cheaper, but they charge shipping so its good when they have a sale you load up on whatever you need so that shipping charge becomes less of a price increase on a per item basis.

If you do not have any Roybi things I would instead wait for a deal on a combo with drill/saw/battery/etc together (past example) because lots of the deals come as a combo with batteries. Although some times you can use cancel trick or return battery if you already have enough batteries past exmple - note almost all the large combo ones (drill plus saw plus battery plus light...) you can not return individual item, the return battery only applies with it is one tool plus one battery deal. just my 2 cents.

This not a good way. Wait for a tool / charger/ battery bundle deal.

This isn't even a very good deal for just batteries, IMO. I don't remember ever paying more that $50 for two 4ah batteries.

I ended up getting a lawnmower from direct tools with 2 of the 4ah batteries, and then you can use those on flashlights, weedwhacker, etc.
