I was able to grab one at $70 on ebay. It said open box, but pretty new in condition.Works great. the only problem is that the SN number can not be found on Apple website.. No idea why...

Nice price, would be even better with my wife's employee discount but I just can't come up with a reason to get one. I don't draw or take notes so not sure what the pencil could do for me.

People returning knock offs like that is unfortunately pretty common.

Buy a close looking fake on wish. Buy a legit one at a box store and return the fake in the original box. Used to be really common scam with AirPods.
