Please enlighten me.
Why do people still use quicken?
Doesn't mint and marcus insight provide same rather better services for free ?

Honest question... How does mint make their money? Are they like facebook and just hoover up your personal and financial information and sell to advertisers? Free normally means they collect your data and sell it. I don't know that quicken doesn't do the same thing, but at least they have a mechanism to pay their workers without using my private information. I have been using quicken since the DOS days, normally I would upgrade every 3 years, so the subscription does not really make me happy, but I use it to hold my CC, banks, investment houses, MSA and for the most case it just works and I have complete control of my data, and where I back it up.

15+ bank live data sync - yes.
Income vs expense reports - yes
category based expenses yes - auto categorization and budget reporting by
category by not just bank but all credit cards.

Plus it's a phone app so it stays in pocket.
all it takes is face unlock to check any report.

User allowed Customization is minimum but
it's free so doesn't hurt trying. And their reports are pretty neat.

I've found that Mint and Personal Capital integrate much more widely with financial institutions than does Quicken. It makes a big difference to have the program update itself with new transactions vs having to manually download updates or (worse) enter transactions individually. That's actually the biggest deal-breaker for me to using Quicken. I used to love Microsoft Money and had a perfect setup until they shuttered. Haven't been able to reproduce exactly, but Personal Capital works very well for me.

Is there a restriction as to how far out into the future your current expiration date can be such that it won't let you apply a renewal code if it's too far? I have vague recollection of that being mentioned in a prior Quicken sale thread.
I find I am using checks — and so using Quicken — less and less every month. Most of my records now come from credit card reports. Quicken does I suppose let you download credit card records but then when you do —you still have to go through each entry and redo most of them. Also I've asked this about Quicken before but for the average person why not just buy the 2014 version (or maybe even a year or so later) on EBay that does not require renewal ? These older versions balance your check book, generate all kinds of reports at tax time and do just about everything I could want. I think I paid $19 for it in 2014 and haven't paid a dime since.

Quicken software has been a slow terrible pile of garbage for years. Add in a subscription model and it's even worse.

This year I mounted a concerted effort to find an improvement to my old stand-alone, non-subscription version of 2016 Quicken. My needs for financial software are on the simple end of the spectrum--I basically want a software version of a paper checkbook register to record all transactions in my primary checking account and allow me to reconcile statements. I don't run a business, I don't track investments via the software, I don't use the software to make payments. I wanted some things that the standalone version of quicken provided--keeping data on my PC. Automated download is less important to me, and I didn't use that feature of Quicken.

I ended up transitioning to KMyMoney earlier this summer.
https://kmymoney.org/
I am very happy with it for my purposes. I was able to import my Quicken files. I am also able to download OFX files from my bank and import them--I am doing this to import my credit card transactions. There is some work on setup and I am still learning the new system. At this point, there is no question for me that KMyMoney is superior to my 2016 standalone version of Quicken. Automated download, based in my hazy understanding, is a developmental aspect of KMyMoney, and if you are interested in that you should look at their forums.
Hope this helps someone.

Just use a different email, I did this on the Staples deal a few months ago, no problem, it even found my data file and password on my PC.

After over twenty years on Quicken, I switched to MoneyDance. $50 and I own it. (There's some discount codes floating around that make it $40.)
MoneyDance does much everything quicker than Quicken. And a much better search and replace. Reminders are not "automated" as in Quicken's Bills & Income. But half my reminders in Quicken were broken.
MoneyDance downloads in the background, something I've wanted Quicken to do for years.
I do have one credit card (Sears Card with Citi) that I can't get to download as they only use the Quicken method. But all my other bank accounts and credit cards download in the background.
I'm very happy. :-)

Not even close. Many gaps especially for those who have self-employed income. And uploading all your financial data to a web service is beyond clueless.

Do you use MoneyDance to keep track of investment accounts and does downloading of investment account transactions work ok?

Same, I've been back and forth with the old version of Quicken to 14 months of the subscription model. The newer software works better with higher resolution screens, but once you're out of subscription you can still technically use the software but 1" off the top and 1.25" off the right is banners letting you know your subscription has expired. Used MoneyDance with the Mac platform as Quicken was and is still terrible for it.

I just purchased the newest version this last week. Simple, no frills application that does a lot that Quicken does and doesn't do (like download transactions in the background) and it works really well with higher resolution screens and can easily adjust text size.

I just cannot continually renew this software when there is such little done to support it year after year. Atleast with MoneyDance you pay once and you're done AND you get the next major release version for 50% off.

Not true. As long as you buy the one OP linked to this thread (and not the one that says "new user only"), you'll be fine. Mine has already expired. I purchased this one and in my quicken windows app, clicked on Help / Enter Activation Code and followed the instructions and it renewed my Quicken subscription/ID for another year.

Yeah, I actually have the same genuine question. Is there any inherent value to using Quicken over like just Mint? Better integration into Quickbooks come tax time maybe?
Used Quicken for years. Got tired of Intuit / Quicken nonsense. Now I use an Excel spreadsheet, but mint is fine worship
