I use a Synology router and the parental controls are phenomenal. Filtering, scheduling, grouping, and reward features have been so helpful the last year and a half using it

I have found this to be the complete opposite of the truth, and that these are affected by significantly fewer vulnerabilities than the more common Netgear, TP Link, etc. routers.

Do you have a source to back up your claim?

for its class, it seems it's one of the best, though a more expensive option since you'll need more like these or their more expensive brothers

i agree. way more options for threat protection etc, than my old netgear R8000 had.

Clearly none of you are in the business, so that statement was not for you. If you were you would know about Cisco Talos. Synology attempts at router firmware with the RTAC2600 I believe it was the most vulnerable ROUTER EVER and failed to patch multiple long term vulnerabilities, when Talos did their year end review in 2020 I believe it was Synology got ripped to shreds and so did their DSM software on their NAS devices.

So your opinions are great and all but they dont line up with facts, again this is only a concern for people who REALLY have something to worry about, which most home users noone cares about unless you got 8+ figures in your bank accounts.

There is more to protection than just what you see on your webpage, there is millions of line of back end code.....
For those business owners/home owners/drug cartel moguls, etc. who REALLY need network connectivity protection... well, they should not even use a wireless network (or at the very least, do NOT use ANY *wireless* clients).

Just my 2 cents. ✓

Cisco itself has a long list of embarassing problems with its own products. https://tools.cisco.com/security/...nListing.x And those are only the ones it has publicly acknowledged. As someone who has had to deal with their quirks, I can say there are plenty of things that don't work like they are supposed to that they won't even bother to create bug reports for, let alone fixes.

This is not to say Synology is categorically better. Quick advice is to make sure you do two things: 1.) Never configure your router for remote management (that is, connect to it from outside your own network) and 2.) Whitelist MAC addresses for anything attached.

First one is fairly easy to abide, but the second one makes setting up new devices a pain the butt.

Maybe you know what you are talking about, maybe you don't. But there have only been two security advisories on the RTAC2600 and they were of moderate threat levels and were quickly patched:

Dragonblood attacks, CVE-2019-9494, and CVE-2019-9496 * Severity: Moderate
Synology-SA-18:01 Meltdown and Spectre Attacks CVE-2017-5715 * Severity: Moderate

I don't own their routers so I don't have first hand experience with them, but their NAS is solid.

Would this router require other modules or standalone for mesh?

These work very well, aside from all the features the wifi connection is just strong throughout the house. I get nearly 0.8 - 1 Gb/s on my iphone in every corner of the house and in the backyard.

I have a2600 downstairs as the base unit and a 2200 upstairs as the mesh point.

The ability to use as a vpn server and the parental controls are also nice

Dude, I am 20 year veteran IT Consultant.

While security and Networking is not my specialty... I regularly work shoulder with those teams.

For home use Synology is excellent. They have had far less code exploits than Qnap or Cisco. The routers have built in IDS/IPS, add in cloudflare anti-malware DNS, and block foreign connections... And I don't think you can find a better consumer grade secure router.

Unless you want to dedicate hardware to pfsense or take something home from work this is a great solution.

I have an AC2600 and two of these mesh Synology's I use as wireless bridges for 4k streaming off my Synology and I never have buffering issues.

These are a great value for the cost.

People who worry about security, Synology router firmware is the most lax and most vulnerable of almost any manufacture. So if your someone important enough that has to worry about that, I gave you your warning.
It supports MFA, WPA3 WPA2 Enterprise and lets you run a RADIUS server, and they do update the firmware regularly.

I'm not sure how that is the most lax and what you're comparing to.

I have two of these combined with the rt2600ac. These replaced 4 google nest wifi nodes.

They are very stable with great coverage. All my IOT devices actually stay connected now.

No issues handling 400 Mbps internet service.

When did 10% off become a slick deal? $14? Barely covers sales tax.

I've been eyeing these for years. Really like the feature set. Heard mostly positive things about the UI. My current router though still hasn't failed me so I'm holding out for a deal on a WiFi 6 router. For the price this thing is tempting but wow it has only a single LAN port and since it's not WiFi 6 that together is a deal breaker. I would need a switch to pair it with and that's more money. It's so odd they didn't include 3 or 4 LAN ports like most residential routers I've looked at in the past. Perhaps that's a developing trend with mesh routers.

Did these ever get VLAN capabilities? The VPN and parental controls seem common things people like. It seems it could be easier to manage than Ubiquiti but probably less flexible?
