- Data allotments are hard capped. Your internet speeds will not simply decrease - your data will turn off completely once you reach your plan's data limit. This is because part of their business model is to sell you more data during your billing cycle.
- While a GSM carrier using T-Mobile's network, you cannot simply activate any GSM unlocked phone. Your phone(s) must be on their approved list. You cannot work around this by activating on an approved phone and SIM-swapping to an otherwise technically compatible phone - you will have no service until you switch back to the phone you activated.

In times of network congestion, networks slow down (deprioritize) prepaid users to varying extents. Verizon is considered the worst at this practice, and AT&T the best.

I had 4 unlocked phones and only one passed their checks and once activated I found out I couldn't swap the sim to another device. My plan was to use boost for my son's first phone, but it ended up only being usable on my new iPhone which was not the phone I was going to give him. It took a lot of back and forth and time to get a refund from stack/boost. You can switch devices in your account online to another IMEI, but in my case I had run out of devices due to their checks. Don't go by their IMEI compatibility checker on their website, call in to confirm your phone can be activated. Other than that, this is a great deal for the price. Boost currently uses T-Mobile, and at some point will be switched to ATT.

I've been playing with Tello 2G: I can:
Send and receive gmail fine-- but any incoming email that includes graphic content will load very slow, or only load the text. Not a problem for my normal communication.
Read and post on Reddit, either via the app or browser access.
Load and read any of my usual news sites, including sports sites, IF I make an effort to find a very lightweight, fast, 'browser'. (Google Go will load most similar sites in 2-4 seconds, if the website allows 'lite' access.).
Use navigation, if I pick a navigation program that allows offline maps or pre-caching maps.
If you can't live without it, use lite version of facebook.
What I can't do:
Any streaming of video or audio.
Allow background data use from apps that will suck down the available data flow.
If you can/t/won't make concessions and prepare for it, 2G fallback is not very useful-- it's not supposed to be.
Regarding calls instability: this doesn't have anything to do with Tello, or Boost, specifically. It has to do with native T-Mobile network coverage. It should be similar for any provider relying on only native T-Mobile coverage.

Update: I read on their site that the fee is only charged if the device has been on Boost Mobile before. Mine hasn't, so they escalated and I got my refund.
