I never understood these things and the price after all of the money I wasted on skylanders - that had a real purpose you could argue. Although, they took up a crapload of room on shelves when you had a full collection.
Do folks buy these vs. the cards to showcase them between gaming sessions? Cards are imho much more practical. At least on the surface, but take this with a grain of salt from a person that doesn't use them.

Well I could be wrong, but I think the main factor at play is that most Amiibo cards are not officially licensed and endorsed by Nintendo.
For me I just like how they look.

I have tons of Amiibo. Never need them for their functionalities. So it's mostly display purposes. Some characters you will never see Nintendo make figures of. Like Duck Hunt or Dr. Mario. So it's people's only chance to own that figure.

Thanks for the response and that's pretty much the answer I expected, but was genuinely curious given my view of how limited the usefulness is as an in-game item.
I was over a friends house the other day and their kids were playing smash brothers with a few. I assumed that these NFC devices should have done more like unlock a character you could play, but it did not.
It was kind of cool that in Zelda the wolf did help out once a day if memory served. Those application seems very limited though.

I'm not an expert on this but people would make NFC Amiibo cards (or buy them) if they ever needed to have an Amiibo functionality. Bit I'm almost certain most like having the figures over functionality if not both.
