This will not happen. Straight out. Why because all major broadband companies still have and operate earlier tech in the Nodes and Headends. If you don't know what that is, google it. Hence, the 3.0 which is relatively fully operational in XFINITY, Verizon, ATT, spectrum and Cox will be coherent in the next 5 to 6 years. But hey. Maybe your area is using different tech from all of us around the 🇺🇸. I do work for one of those companies and worked at Verizon for 4 years in their NY headend. 👍

I work for xfinity as a cable tech. These will work on xfinity. Only downside is it's refurbished. If Mac address of refurbished unit is still tied to an account, it will be an issue to add modem to your account.

Working in cable you still see the occasional docsis 2 modem in the homes... Doubt they will ban docsis 3 anytime soon. Also 16 channels should be good for up to 500mbps download if you pay for higher speed you should really look for more channel bonding or docsis3.1 if anyone is curious

Can any one confirm the maximum download speed on Xfinity? Walmart says 680Mbps, but Xfinity says 372 Mbps!

They seem hostile to customer-owned modems period. I just now tried to get them to activate a brand new Netgear CM1100, which is DOCSIS 3.1. First they said the CM1100 isn't supported, and then when I pasted the link to their page that says it is, they said that the MAC was invalid. This was through chat so one would think they could handle copy/pasting a MAC. Man, they suck.
They do suck. Sometimes you need to call back and get a different rep. They want you using one of their units, since it allows access to their network for anyone with a comcast login.

Only Comcast owned modems activate automatically through their app. I've never gotten a customer owned modem to activate through their app. I've actually argued with reps on the phone because they keep telling me to use the app and the app refuses to activate non Comcast owned modems, I finally figured that out when one rep finally told me only Comcast owned modems will activate with their app and that's why it's never worked for me. The manual process has the reps ask you the model which I assume they just look up to see if it's compatible before they actually try to activate it which is why telling them it's something else will get them to try the activation.

You used to be able to plug the modem in and just try to use it and it would direct you to a Comcast login page to activate the modem and that worked fine but now it just tells you to use the app which doesn't work. You also used to be able to go to a specific Comcast url that would activate your modem and now that as well forces you to use their app.
I activated my new Netgear CM1000 on Comcast via their invasive little app just this last Sunday. I have since bought a CM1100 for less than I paid BB for the CM1000. I'll activate that one and return the first tonight. I wanted to order this little guy for a backup because apparently surge protection does nothing to stop induced current from VERY close (but not direct) lightning.

Does anyone know how to *deactivate* a modem on Comcast (so whoever buys the CM1000 open box later doesn't have a problem)? TIA

You're crazy to think 3.0 is going anytime soon. Some ISP's, including spectrum have these three tiers: 200, 500 and 1 Gig tier. The regular consumer can't afford or needs a 1 gig connection. 500 and below, 3.0 will work fine. For the price this thing will lay itself off in under 6 months, probably less.
It's not that the technology won't be usable or relevant, it's that ISPs are greedy and are already phasing 3.0 out. It's not a good thing and it's really annoying, but it's only a $17 product so you're not out much if it happens.

Ban? Why would they do that?
They don't band. They have list of cable modems they official support. Eventually a very old model design/standard will no longer be officially supported. I had been using a modem that was no longer officially supported for probably years past the end of support. I suspect no one could swap in such a non-supported model onto their accounts but if the modem was already on the account then Comcast would may not make someone replace it--they just won't necessarily help with service issues if the modem may be the source of the problem. I did eventually replace my non-supported modem with this one because Comcast stated I should be able to get higher speeds so I bought this modem as it was the cheapest non-puma chipset officially supported modem and Comcast could provision it for the speed I should get and much higher if I ever decided to pay more for higher speeds or if Comcast decided to up my speed automatically. It won't support the top speeds available from Comcast.

You go with what Xfinity/Comcast says they will provision it up to. It has to do the number of channels the modem supports. Walmart/Netgear lists the maximum possible but not what the maximum the cable company is willing to provision it for based on channel bonding. Look at prior threads here for cable modem deals for more details.

This is a HUGE YMMV..

Add 5qt oil and a filter. That's my goto filler. Laundry or dish soap is second..

I had this modem and gave it to my neighbor. I upgraded to 1Gb and had to get a new one. My neighbor is still using it with service in the 200 tier range. Comcast.

I would go with any spec Comcast claims to support and not the vendor. Comcast can provision the device with more restrictive settings than what it is capable of in the "interest of their network". I had a SB6141 back in the day that worked perfect for my 150 blast service. One day it stopped working. After digging around awhile I noticed they hardcoded the uplink port to only connect at a max of 100Mb instead of 1Gb which the physical port is capable of and was using prior to that. I resolved that by changing the other end to 100Mb and it started working again but now I was only getting 100Mb max obviously. A day or two later I got an email that I had to upgrade my CM because it was not compatible with my plan speed although it had been working at that plan speed for years.

I bought this same refurbished modem during a slick deal last year. It was over $20 then.

I'm using it with Comcast without issue. I have 50 Mbps service.

On Xfinity not releasing MAC addresses of previously registered modems, I call BS on Xfinity. They certainly find a way to release the MAC address of all their customer return modems which they give to other customers.

BS agree. They know how to do it but I think they are reluctant on an active account that has that MAC. Could be back due, never cancelled, pending something, SNAFU, incompetency. They CAN but there may be a reason they choose not to.

I ran into that myself on a small scale. Moving from one house to another. There was lag in them closing one account vs opening the other and I could not activate my same CM right away. I thought I had everything worked out with them that I could unplug from one house in the morning and plugin the other in the afternoon. It did not go down that way as promised/planned at all..... Hindsight.. It would have been less hassle and time for me to just run to the store and buy a new modem..

Maybe they finally fixed their app, its been about 10 months since the last time I have had to activate a modem.

You can ask them on the phone but they don't always do it right or will tell you it is deactivated when its really not (I gave my sister a modem and they told me on the phone they removed it but when she tried to use it they said it was still active on my account). I've gone into the comcast store twice with the modem in hand that I bought at a thrift store and had them remove from the old persons account because comcast said it was still active on the other persons account on the phone. They refused to remove it over the phone as I wasn't the account holder, but I guess since the store can see I have the modem in my hands that the old owner doesn't actually have it anymore they will remove it.

I thought xfinity would remove the modem from customer account after customer cancel the service?

For Comcast/Xfinity, to find list of compatible modems:
https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices/#unauth

For my zip, this modem isn't listed as compatible.
