I use it with no problems. I heard there might be an issue if you put a really thick screen protector. I have dbrand skin and a generic glass protector and I don't have any issues

This is going on sale so frequently. Apple should consider making this regular price rather than expecting insanely high prices like $350.

Anyone know the difference between the 4th generation and newer 5th generation? Like what was the big difference that warranted a new version?

The 5th gen iPad Pro is slightly thicker than the 3rd & 4th gen, so the fit isn't quite perfect when the keyboard is closed. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211091

It really has to do with the new blue-LED backlighting system that's on the 12.9 M1 (5th gen). The 11 inch doesn't have the special backlight so the thickness remains the same and it's compatible with the 4th gen (non-M1). I learned this while I was shopping around for a hardened case for the M1 12.9.

As others have said, the thickness difference isn't significant so the 4th gen 12.9 magic keyboard should fit but it won't have that satisfying clasp. Some even reported that it lifts slightly and worse with a tempered glass screen protector. For Apple, it's easier to simply discontinue the 4th gen 12.9 keyboard in black and make the black and white editions match the 5th gen 12.9 M1 iPad Pro only. The white one released when the 5th gen came out so it doesn't have this problem. Apple/Best Buy is probably reducing old stock of black keyboards.

As far as the magic keyboard is concerned, it really makes the iPad into a laptop replacement but it lacks function keys, and the trackpad isn't haptic (there are physical buttons underneath). My MacBook Pro M1 has a much more satisfying trackpad. Some also have stated that there should have been dedicated media control buttons and buttons to control the screen brightness. Unfortunately, you have to touch the screen for those changes.

This or the smart folio on Amazon for $99 if I don't think I'll need a track pad?

This is the clearance of the old one. It's going on sale frequently because there's a new SKU specifically designed for the new models and thus is the SKU now backed by Apple in their store agreements. The old once is being liquidated out.

I believe the keys on the actual keyboard are actually better too. More key travel, higher quality and backlit I believe. You also get the advantage of being able to tilt the viewing angle as you please vs just the two you get with the smart folio.

Besides that, trackpad and the usb c charging in the case, there isn't much else. I guess it's up to you to decide if it's worth the extra premium. I have the smart folio keyboard but I think I'd spend the extra to get the magic keyboard if I had to pick again.

I picked up the iPad Pro 12.9 and 4th gen Magic Keyboard at BB on Saturday. I don't have a screen protector on it and the fit seems fine to me. I do have a M1 MacBook already though so I'm testing out both to see if I really need them or if I should downsize to a smaller one.
