Yea, they aren't great and all fitbits only last about a year right after it's out of warranty. Fitbit only has their app going for them but now they charge a subscription fee to extract your data. Switched to Garmin and it's has been great. More accurate and a lot of data at no extra cost.

Piling on with others, my wife and I each have a Versa going on 3 years with no issues for either and battery still lasts 3-4 days with heavy use.

it's expensive toy, even at this discount
check HR accuracy reviews at amzn . fitbit, etc to make your mind if that is acceptable for your needs

Fitbit Charge 5 is available for pre-order at $180, starting a few days ago, something else to consider anyways.

Not to derail this thread, but I'm looking for a fitness watch and really don't know what to get. I have no bias or brand favorites. Wear OS 3 is coming out soon, I hear, so maybe the Samsung Galaxy 4 Smartwatch? I don't know. I really don't need mp3s, texts/calls/notifications on my Watch, but I guess those are pretty standard features these days, I suppose I could just not use them.

I have been using the charge 2 since 2016, the battery lasts about 3 days with extensive use (tracking all my activity) with normal use (no tracking) it lasts about 5 days...
However, they don't have a lot of support for older versions, sometimes I have trouble syncing, but it's starts working in a couple of days..

Lucky you or you don't train with it constantly and push the device.

Don't get your hopes high with Samsung Galaxy watch 4.
I received it three days back and the battery life is crappy to the core.
Seriously I thought I would be upgrading from my 3+ years old Garmin Vivoactive 3. The reason I got it because Samsung gave $100 in trade in and my 3 years old Garmin VA3 battery life after three years becomes horrible and I was getting hardly two days.
But, after using Garmin I think I cannot use these toy watches Apple, Samsung and Fitbit.
They are just fancy watches which gives you notification.
I already started hating Samsung watch 4.
Hardly two days of battery life.
You need download three to four different Samsung apps and plugins to make sense of anything.
Samsung health is garbage.
So used to the Garmin connect detail app, you can customize everything.
The Samsung watch 4 face customization is so limited.
The only saving grace is, I am planning to give garbage Samsung watch to my wife it's good for her fancy limited use case.
I am looking for Garmin Fenix deal now.

If you're serious about fitness plus smart watch go for Garmin.

I got this around $185 this past spring, I like it much better than my old Versa. Excellent battery life and zero sync issues. No scratches on my screen so far and remains responsive as ever. However, the next go around I will probably go with a Charge, since this has a lot of features I don't use.

Fitness features, Garmin can't be beat. Choose Vivoactive or Instinct or Forerunner or Fenix based on your budget and it would last a very long time.

Anecdotally—

I got the Alta HR around April of 2019, and I know two other people who also got them within a few months of that time.

All three of us had ours basically die right around the 14-15 month mark. They stopped syncing correctly, stopped getting accurate reads on sleep, battery life dropped from 5+ days to less than two days.

One of my friends just basically stopped using hers after troubleshooting it and failing. One of them got a newer model. And I ended up switching to an old iWatch I had lying around.

What's most interesting to me is that, just a couple months later, I decided to give my Fitbit another try and suddenly it works great again. Battery life is still only 2-3 days, but that's manageable.

N of 3 on this anecdote, but still:

I strongly suspect that Fitbit does this on purpose in some way, just like the lawsuit Apple had to settle not that long ago about slowing down older iPhones. They are trying to get you to upgrade and pushing software/firmware updates that are conducive to that.

I called every repair shop in my area (Chicago suburb) and none would/could repair the glass or screen on my Fitbit Sense. Even Fitbit forums say they don't repair them.

If I didn't get such a steep discount through my health insurance for Fitbit, I would ditch them in the blink of an eye.

I bought the Samsung Active 2 and liked it, did what I needed, mainly notifications while at work. But 13 months in the back cover just fell off...I never swam or showered with it. Reading thru forums it's a pretty common thing with Samsung watches. Even for those under warranty, Samsung won't repair it, says it's water damage, wants $80-300 to repair. $270 and it lasts only a year? Really Samsung?

One thing to take into account the Samsung galaxy 4 smartwatch only device that has the BAI or BIA whatever its called where it can give you a full body composition including your current weight anytime you want in real time. That feature alone for fitness purposes seems like a great way to keep yourself accountable when splurging.
