  • About this deal:
    • This price is $150 lower (25% savings) than the list price.
    • Deals on 17.3" laptops have been less common than the more popular smaller sizes. This is a good budget choice for those who have light to moderate computing power needs and wish to have a larger than average display.

Stopped by my local (not really that local) Staples and picked one up.

Initial impression -- for an i3 CPU, it's pretty decent! 4 Core / 8 thread. 3.7Ghz Turbo.
The SSD is an NVMe Samsung according to device manager.
The WIFI card is an Intel AX201 Wifi6 adapter.

The screen is fine. I've seen worse and I've seen better, but for a $450 laptop, it's a decent screen. Colors and brightness are acceptable.

The keyboard is confirmed NOT backlit. As a matter of fact, the picture on Staples.com of this unit shows the F4 key with a symbol on it of a lit keycap. The actual laptop has the F4 key blank. So there must be a model with a backlit KB, but this one is not it.

If you have questions, let me know. I've got a spare 8GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM I want to stick it in so I'll be opening it up.

edit: I forgot, it comes with McAfee, Wild Tangent Games and Express VPN bloatware. Easily uninstalled. Other than that, pretty lean.

edit 2: Here are pics of the inside. 2.5" SATA missing cable, etc.

How did you pry open the bottom I took the screws out but couldn't get the case to open also hear kind of cable we need to fit a sata2 ssd to this? Tnx
Yes, I was confused at first too.

You have to strip away the rubber strips on the bottom.
There are more screws under there.

I'd order this if I knew for sure that it had a SATA port and the mounting hardware. Since I use Linux and prefer an encrypted hard drive, it would be nice to be able to easily add a SSD, otherwise I'd have to wipe the included Windows. I'm not sure how well dual boot on a single drive would work with Windows and LUKS encrypted Linux.
No SATA cable or bracket included. Possible to find on ebay?

You can usually just feel where the indents are under the rubber and push it aside to get a screwdriver in there, at least with my Envy 15t.

Man, in the old days laptops memory and drives were accessible with a couple of screws in their own little compartments. These days you often need to dismount the damn keyboards. I guess they are just trying to make it difficult to upgrade your own machine. At least it isn't Apple where parts are soldered in to the board and upgrades to pre-ordered machines are ridiculously overpriced. Get off of my lawn, you kids.

Looking on ebay, I see SATA cables for about $10.
Don't need a mount if your putting in a SSD. Just a small piece of double-sided foam tape will keep it in place.

Thanks, OP. Got one for each of our parents, as they were on OLD computers and just needed something to do basic computing.

Good question. I would like at least another 8GB but might do more if it's a slick deal.

Overblown. You cannot do in place upgrade, but fresh install Win11 will install on anything Win10 can install on. Which is almost everything.
Your average consumer, like 95% of people buying PCs, has no idea how to do a clean install of Windows. They will see marketing for new Windows 11, find out they cant upgrade (many wont even know its a free upgrade) and they will buy a new PC. This happens every Windows launch. This is one of the reasons Microsoft is fine doing these large updates for free, instead of charging people like they used to, as they know consumers will buy new devices which means more licenses sold to manufacturers (there are other things like data collection too)
