  • About this deal:
    • This price is $150 lower (25% savings) than the list price.
    • Deals on 17.3" laptops have been less common than the more popular smaller sizes. This is a good budget choice for those who have light to moderate computing power needs and wish to have a larger than average display.

Stopped by my local (not really that local) Staples and picked one up.

Initial impression -- for an i3 CPU, it's pretty decent! 4 Core / 8 thread. 3.7Ghz Turbo.
The SSD is an NVMe Samsung according to device manager.
The WIFI card is an Intel AX201 Wifi6 adapter.

The screen is fine. I've seen worse and I've seen better, but for a $450 laptop, it's a decent screen. Colors and brightness are acceptable.

The keyboard is confirmed NOT backlit. As a matter of fact, the picture on Staples.com of this unit shows the F4 key with a symbol on it of a lit keycap. The actual laptop has the F4 key blank. So there must be a model with a backlit KB, but this one is not it.

If you have questions, let me know. I've got a spare 8GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM I want to stick it in so I'll be opening it up.

edit: I forgot, it comes with McAfee, Wild Tangent Games and Express VPN bloatware. Easily uninstalled. Other than that, pretty lean.

edit 2: Here are pics of the inside. 2.5" SATA missing cable, etc.

Overblown. You cannot do in place upgrade, but fresh install Win11 will install on anything Win10 can install on. Which is almost everything.
Quote from essix8 :
Your average consumer, like 95% of people buying PCs, has no idea how to do a clean install of Windows. They will see marketing for new Windows 11, find out they cant upgrade (many wont even know its a free upgrade) and they will buy a new PC. This happens every Windows launch. This is one of the reasons Microsoft is fine doing these large updates for free, instead of charging people like they used to, as they know consumers will buy new devices which means more licenses sold to manufacturers (there are other things like data collection too)
Who says you cannot do an upgrade from Windows 10 to 11? MS says right on their Windows 11 page that you CAN upgrade to Windows 11 if your system meets the minimum hardware requirements.

If your system does not meet their requirements, I understood it to say that you can still do a CLEAN install from scratch, but upgrades were only for compatible systems.

I let the laptop discharge down to 90% and plugged in USB-C charger, but no...it does not recognize the charger. That would have been a nice little bonus. But, the charger that comes with it isn't large or heavy.

Got a url or link for one you found tnx
I searched ebay and Amazon for "HP 17 Laptop SATA cable" and there are numerous choices which all look like they would work, just the flat cable length is different. I think just get a cable with at least the necessary length (it's pretty short inside the laptop) and fingers crossed it works!

Sorry I don't have an exact part number to match it to since I don't even know what model this laptop is! Does it have a model name or just the model number?

edit: buzzy on post 38 was nice enough to post the service manual which lists part numbers but (of course) there is no part listed for the SATA cable...

The photo you took seems to show the same configuration as that manual. (There is a zoomed in excerpt of your photo attached, as well as the image from the manual.) It looks like a very short cable with a small right angle connector (it may be a separate part from the cable) for the motherboard end, and a SATA connector on the other end. Maybe someone can suggest a match.

It's a 10 pin connector, and the cables I see are also 10 pins so it's a high probability they will work. It's just a matter of getting a long enough flat cable. Any extra can be folded away.

Going to order one from Amazon [amazon.com]. Should have by Thursday.

Off the top, I see the HP is better in that it comes with a solid state drive, Lenovo comes with a legacy slow HDD. Second, the HP has a 1920x1080 display, and the Lenovo is 1600x900.

Lastly, and most important, is the Lenovo has a dual core i3 CPU. The HP has a QUAD CORE i3 CPU.

The HP is in every way better than the Lenovo (except price). I doubt that Lenovo has ever been $620 (list price they show).

Thanks so much for that post. Just dropped my son's ideapad 320-17AST https://support.lenovo.com/hn/en/solutions/pd105075. In a pinch, looking for a cheaper browsing computer that won't lag or slow down while surfing like the Lenovo did. Or maybe that only exists with the higher processor tiered models. Hoping this would work well in that regard. Again, appreciate the post and help!
