Never had the problem but once in my own, much older (no new pipe), home. We always use fine strainers on all the drains. In the shower it's best to buy the cheap dollar store plastic large strainer and turn it upside down. We did have one clog when we first got the place many years ago but it was from the main kitchen line down to the basement. After clearing the clog there we have been clog free and feels like it's our habits of only letting water based liquids down the drain (no grease or oil, or anything like that). About once a year, if I remember, we do the hot water flush with baking soda. That's normally because I am replacing the baking soda in the fridge (yeah I know it should be replaced more often, but if it smells fine I pretty much forget. Probably need to replace it now).
I'm sure this has its applications and it's a great deal at this price. I just don't find myself using it often anymore.

The best and cheapest solution is to prevent things going down the drain that shouldn't. That means using drain covers in showers and sinks.
