They are doing this because they just removed HBOMax from Amazon Prime.

Terms and Conditions
Offer valid from September 17, 2021 through September 26, 2021. This offer is ONLY for new and returning HBO Max customers. Offer valid in the U.S. only. Offer available at HBOMax.com and via the following participating subscription provider platforms: Apple, Google, Roku, LG, Microsoft, Sony, and Vizio. Offer may only be redeemed once and cannot be combined with any other promotional or free trial offer for HBO Max. Eligible consumers who take advantage of this promotional offer will get access to the HBO Max Ad-Free monthly plan at a discounted rate of $7.49/mo. (plus applicable tax) for the first 6 months. You can cancel anytime. To sign up, you need a valid method of payment. After your discounted 6-month subscription period, your subscription will auto-renew each month at the then-current subscription price for the HBO Max Ad-Free monthly plan (currently $14.99/mo. plus applicable tax), on a recurring basis, unless you cancel before the renewal. To cancel your subscription, see Subscription in your settings of HBO Max. If you cancel your subscription, you will continue to have access to HBO Max for the remainder of time you have already paid for.

Here's the trick to do that. First sign up for the $7.49 monthly plan. Then once you have that setup, click on your name in the top right corner, go to Subscriptions > Manage Subscriptions > Switch Plans > Select Yearly > Select the offer for $109.99
On the next page to confirm, it's going to say:
"You will be charged $102.5 today, which is the price difference between plans plus applicable taxes. Please note if you're currently participating in a promotional offer, it will not carry over to your new plan."
In this way, you can get the $40 discount, which is not quite as much as $45 saved on the 6 monthly payments, but at least you will also get $25 back from AMEX. The net cost would be $84.99 for 12 months which ends up averaging around $7.0825/month.

They have a bunch of Studio Ghibli movies [hbomax.com] on HBO Max too.
Mare of Easttown [rottentomatoes.com], Made for Love [rottentomatoes.com], & The Flight Attendant [rottentomatoes.com] are pretty good HBO originals.
