  • How Trade-In Works:
    1. Calculate your trade-in phone's value
    2. Buy your new phone online
    3. Complete your new phone purchase online and activate your phone on the carrier's network (Best Buy will help with all that.)
    4. Pick up your new phone in one of our stores
    5. Bring your trade-in phone with you when you pick up your new one. Best Buy will check to make sure you're trading in the same phone you told them about online and check for any damage that might make your trade-in ineligible for the promotion.
    6. Best Buy will take your trade-in's value off the cost of your new phone.
      • Trade-in value is calculated to represent a working phone that turns on and does not have a cracked or broken screen. Your phone will be evaluated when you trade it in to validate that it meets all requirements.
      • Your order must be picked up from a store to complete your trade-in and apply its value to your new phone purchase.

Service will activate but enhancements to 5G networking require a SIM stamped with "R15."
Nah, I got 5G and 5G UC everywhere I went where available. Np at all!

I don't really care how many thumbs down from people called themselves "EXPERTS" here!!
I just want to share my real life experience with other byers!!

I'm happy for you. Per T-Mobile you are not assured full 5G feature set unless you have the R15 SIM. There is a lot that needs to change under the covers as the rollout continues. One reason I traded my 12 for a 13 is the plan to enable voice over new radio which requires an iPhone 13. The other complexities are beyond me but may slow your speeds - ability to be "standalone" 5G as opposed to non-standalone requiring at least two available bands or else you drop to 4G LTE.

Yeah, I hear you!
I was surprised as well when I got the 5G UC reception on my phone and I did the speed test it's even faster than my Verizon Fios Wi-Fi!

Does the eSim have the same capabilities as the "R15" sim?

Chatted with twitter on Wednesday at 8 PM. Saw it was unlocked today, Friday at about 1 PM eastern.
Do I have to insert my SIM card and then I process unlock request or can they do it with the phone being un activated

You need to insert a SIM card from a different carrier then the unlock process will complete.

Is there any benefit when activate using BB website for all the upgrade folks? For me, I didn't. They gave me the new sim card and asked if I needed to insert into the new phone, I said no and walked out with the phone + new sim card? I just used my old sim card and activated the phone on Saturday after the launched date. Message Tforce on Tuesday and got my phone unlocked Thursday.

I used a number from another plan to do the upgrade because my plan isn't eligible for some reason. Also, I was afraid when they tried to activate the new sim, which means the current sim from the # that I used to do the trade in would be deactivated and I had to ship the sim to that person.

I always go to mytmo account to update a new sim card whenever I need to. So I don't know the reasons or benefits using BB to activate sim card.
If you are using a physical sim card in your old phone, you don't need to activate through bestbuy site, you can just put in your old sim card in the new phone and it will work, now if you were using an esim instead of physical sim card, you will need to use bestbuy supplied physical sim card to initially activate the phone and also do the activation through bestbuy website, on the initial setup phone does not allow activation via esim, it asks for a physical sim card, at least that's what happened with me

Yeah that's what happened with me as well. I went ahead and switched it to eSIM on the T-Mobile site and everything works great now. Chucked out the SIM Best Buy gave me.

Good question! I move SIM cards from phone to phone so eSIM capability is a weak spot for me. I will do some research on my phone sites and if I find anything interesting I will post it here.

Dan

EDIT: R15 debate goes back to release of iPhone 12 - CS might blame old SIM for any issues but SIM function itself seems quite basic:

As long as your phone says "no sim restriction", you're good to go. Just pop in any simcard and it will work.

You have to tell the website you are trading in a T-Mobile iPhone even if you are not. The folks at the store don't seem to care as long as the trade-in has no cracks.
