All of these "new phone" deals have hidden costs rolled into the plans they want you to sign up for. Speak with an agent and try to get a monthly bill estimate but be aware they lie too.

For example my account with ATT is flagged by CS reps because I'm grandfathered into a sweetheart deal. I get slammed with advertisements to switch and one CS rep even admitted my account was listed to receive special offers.

I pay $100 a month + $10 a line and get 25 gigs shared, hotspot and rollover. The rollover is so good I have never run out of data. The kicker is I have an TimeWarner discount of 30% that gets applied to the $100 service charge. All in I pay about 120 a month for 4 lines for my family.

If I "upgrade" for a new phone, even if I got a "free" $1000 new iPhone 13 pro my bill would jump to about $200 a month because the discount only gets applied to a single $50 dollar line and the plans themselves are just that much more expensive. Even worse, if I upgrade they will not honor the 30% TW discount as it changed. The agent refused to tell me one way or the other if the discount would be honored. I had to "switch to see if it gets applied"

All said an done, the savings on a new phone would evaporate after about a year of the new service and I'm now paying an extra 80 a month forever.

Be wary slick dealers. Don't let new phone sparkle blind you.

Could you tell us more?
What phone did you trade-in?
What phone did you purchase on installment plan?
Where did you trade-in? ATT or Apple?
Did you really get the whole credit amount lump sum?
Thank you!
XSmax. We bought the 13 max pro on launch day online, they even sent us boxes to return the trade ins but decided to take it in store. I traded in at the att store because I read peopls bad stories of att not receiving them. You don't get the lump sum. You get a credit each month. Ours is $27.78 per phone times 36 months. It basically just offsets part of the monthly phone price. We live in a rural area where ATT works the best so well never be swapping carriers. Not a big deal for us.

Sweet thanks. Did it just show up on your bill or somewhere special on your account?
The first time (incorrect small amount) it showed up on my bill. After a long call (couple calls actually), I didn't hang up until I saw full credit pop up on my account which it did. I guess that was the good thing with this. Since they could not figure out how to solve monthly credit issue, they paid full credit at once. So I am not on hook for 30 months.

I just buy through Apple instead now to skip all this BS from the phone companies even if it's a few bucks more.

Noooo! They suck! Gave them my phone as trade for $800, went to pay off the new one after the first month because my bill was so much more than they said(because of their junk fees). Also, no service in my home. If you leave the phone is full price, if you pay off your phone early, they stop the credits, if you trade up your phone the credit goes away. It's AT&T's way to make you overpay for their crappy service for three years by holding your phone hostage. DONT FALL FOR IT. RUN!!!

I switched to AT&T in May and never received my BYOD $250 credit. Literally just hung up the phone with CS which was the most pleasant experience I've ever had with a wireless carrier. He applied the entire credit to my account since it was supposed to start 3 months after I started service. So far my experience with AT&T signals and customer service have been stellar. I should have switched years ago. Sure I'm paying double what I was paying at T-Mobile for one line but the discount doesn't mean shit when you are constantly dropping calls or not sending/receiving text messages, etc.
