That and also their firmware updates just stop after a while. I will go with Asus any day as they regularly update their routers . I am currently waiting for an AX 86U deal.

I don't know why someone (have a lot of them here) would thumb down your question but I'd like to know as well if anyone owned both routers for a medium sized house. This Nighthawk (RAX78) @$200 is very likely a better deal (lowest for AX86U I have seen around $250) but in terms of speed over distance AX86U would likely win, especially at the end of range. Asus also has a 2.5GbE WAN port.

From my reading, RAX78 (this one) is pretty much the same as RAX70 though the RAX70 has slightly faster AX 2x2 speed at both 2.4GHz (600Mbps vs 460) and 5GHz (1200Mbps vs 960). 5GHz 4x4 speed is the same at 4800Mbps but I don't have any client that'd take advantage of that. My thought is that in real world, there will be very little difference between these two and AX86U will edge out both if you have a very large space but for the vast majority of people this router would be just as good as AX86U and RAX70. Considering it's from Costco and a return would be pretty easy, I might just try it out.

I think the WiFi speeds degrade terribly with Netgear routers. I have R7000, the lan speeds are 700mbps , while WiFi speeds are max 100 for 1Gbps connection. Horrible at times. Better off buying ASUS router?

Too bad just bought a ASUS AX86U to replace my broken NetGear C6250 (cable modem and wireless router 2-in-1). It's a five years old device, so it's about the time.

I've been a loyal NetGear customer in the past, but I've got two of their products failed on me recently. I would have try this again if I could wait, but unfortunately I am WFH and that dropping and cutting Zoom call already frustrated my coworkers.

I'm running a Netgear AC2100 for almost 2 years not with no issues, except when doing some large torrents (on the router), occasionally it may reset itself, but at least I did not touch its power button in more than a year now... no issues with my wifi, many devices connected and it runs rock solid!

Coming from an Asus masked as a T-Mobile router that it is still running today, but after one year the thing just refused to work, I had to reset it twice so I got pissed and gave it to someone with a small house/network - he said it is running rock solid today, maybe just to piss me off...

That really doesn't say anything about the router being "horrible". What kind of client are you using? How close are you to the router? Are their any walls in between? What channel are you using? How much wifi interference do you have around the house?

R7000 is a model from 2013, which was not built for gigabit wireless and real life wifi max has been tested to be less than 450Mbps with the fastest compatible client in the same room within direct line of sight. 100Mbps is probably too low but not unrealistic unless you are pretty close to the router.

I am downstairs while the router (R7000) is upstairs in a room not directly above me and yet I got faster download speed (305Mbps) from my phone using the Ookla app than my actual internet speed (FIOS 200/200). Not everyone will see this kind of speed as my neighboring houses are about 100 ft apart which keeps the interference low. When I go to the patio or the furthest room in the basement, the signal is weak / speed is low and that's what I hope to improve with a new router as most of my client devices now support wifi 6. My R7000 has been rock solid for 7+ years though I run Merlin and not stock Netgear FW.

What Netgear devices failed? I moved from Asus to Netgear with R7000 and was so happy that I got their 10Gbps switch a few years ago. The R7000 has been extremely stable for WFH so if RAX78 is not as reliable, it's going back - irrespective of the speed that wifi 6 brings.

The failed ones are C6250 and R6400. Like what I've described, the C6250 kept dropping packets, so my Zoom is unusable randomly. That R6400 randomly reboots itself even I upgraded the firmware to the latest version. Sometimes 2 times a day, sometimes more than 5 times, it's just completely random.

R7000 is a champ, I bought one for my parents back in 2014 and I never heard from them complaining about it ever since.

How are you liking the ASUS AX86U? I'm in the market for a new router and that one is on my short list.
