I recommend giving the newer keyboard a physical test-drive at a store or just be prepared to exercise the return option.

The Ergo 4000 has been my go-to for seven years. I had telepathic command of all of its keys. However, when I "upgraded" to the newer ergonomic keyboard, I didnt have this command anymore. It is hard to explain...the key travel is a bit more shallow, and the taper of the keys from the top of the keyboard to the bottom is smoother and less punctuated. Imagine stairsteps which have a larger height difference between each step vs a ramp. I prefer the former. I ended up returning the newer KB and am still using the 4000. It isnt technically broken, but it is *very* worn out.

Ironically, the MS sculpt has even less key travel, but yet I adapted to it well, but not so with the new ergo. However, the sculpt doesnt have a number pad, which is a huge no-no for my work. So I ended up returning it as well.

Tl;dr - go try the new one out and form your own opinion. Comfort is very subjective.

Good deal. Great keyboard and very comfy. Only negative is being wired. If only this is wireless.

This (the differing layout) is the sole reason I haven't gotten it.

I've been using the Microsoft Ergonomic Natural Elite keyboard for almost 22 years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mic...l_Keyboard

The only thing that kills my desire to want to use this is how accustomed my hands have become to reaching a certain distance for the function keys as well as the layout of the arrows and the "home/end" block.

I have no need for the multimedia/app keys at the top of the featured device.

I wouldn't mind getting a brand new, identical keyboard if it had the same layout for the same price.
I'm still rocking a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Gen1/V1! I love this thing and dread the day it dies. Not sure exactly why I bought it back in the late '90's but I did and no regrets about it. I'd love a newer version that was actually USB instead of PS2 for compatibility reasons. I'm using a PS2 to USB converter on it now which is working pretty well.

Why is wired bad?

I prefer wired as well. No delay on wake-up, no worrying about batteries or connection issues. This keyboard is for a desktop, it's not like I'm walking around with it.

Wireless mouse makes sense to me because you move it around a lot and wires can get tangled.

I don't move my keyboard around like a mouse but I guess some people do 😂🤣😂

reading all these comments, now i'm scared my 12 year old 4000 will die... it even survived a mountain dew spill earlier in its life (took it apart and washed it in the bathtub).

Yep, that's my set-up. The older 4000 wired keyboard and a wireless Logitech MX Master 3 for a mouse.

This is a downgrade from the classic MS Ergo 4000, but it's still better than all the clones I've tried on Amazon. I agree the keys are too mushy for sure. But unless you get into the >$100 range it's probably still the best.

I can't believe they stopped making the 4000s. I wish I bought 10 of them.
No, the MS Sculpt is better in every way. I had a hoard of stashed 4000s and I sold them all and bought 5 Sculpts.

They are about $50 on sale (get it without the crappy bundled mouse)

The Elite was nice, decent key action unlike the 4000, but the arrow key layout is what killed it for me.

How is it better?

I love all the extra buttons on my 4000.

I wish I could buy more when it was $10

Apparently I'm the only person on SD who hates this type of keyboard.

how is the space bar feeling here? 4000 was notorious for its space bar inconsistency issues.
Its more that it forced correct form, pushing closer to the front of the bar with the thumb than the top edges. I've gone through enough of them to feel they are all the same when used correctly.

I tried this keyboard and also did not like it. It is way too wide (putting the mouse in an awkward position), and I found the spacing between some of the keys way too large. This keyboard was less ergonomic for me than a standard mechanical keyboard.

The "wave" style keyboards with more traditional key layouts work fine for me, and I think a true split keyboard (two completely separate halves) would also work.

Worth upgrading from the MS Ergo 4000? Looks very similar so I assume not.
Do yourself a favor, look at how much it is to buy a new 4000. They discontinued them in favor of this model, and people like me are going crazy when our boards break and we try this replacement. It's nothing like the feel of the 4000.

I just last week spent about $200 delivered for a new open box 4000 and considered myself lucky to find that deal. I spilled an iced tea on my other board - RIP - and tried the new one for a good while - its no substitute.
