The Ergo 4000 has been my go-to for seven years. I had telepathic command of all of its keys. However, when I "upgraded" to the newer ergonomic keyboard, I didnt have this command anymore. It is hard to explain...the key travel is a bit more shallow, and the taper of the keys from the top of the keyboard to the bottom is smoother and less punctuated. Imagine stairsteps which have a larger height difference between each step vs a ramp. I prefer the former. I ended up returning the newer KB and am still using the 4000. It isnt technically broken, but it is *very* worn out.
Ironically, the MS sculpt has even less key travel, but yet I adapted to it well, but not so with the new ergo. However, the sculpt doesnt have a number pad, which is a huge no-no for my work. So I ended up returning it as well.
Tl;dr - go try the new one out and form your own opinion. Comfort is very subjective.

I love all the extra buttons on my 4000.
I wish I could buy more when it was $10
For this new Ergonomic keyboard, I do find the delete key that is right above backspace to be an odd choice. I haven't use it yet so not sure if it would bother me, but it's strange.
I just last week spent about $200 delivered for a new open box 4000 and considered myself lucky to find that deal. I spilled an iced tea on my other board - RIP - and tried the new one for a good while - its no substitute.
They are about $50 on sale (get it without the crappy bundled mouse)

I really havent had any problems other than that, using it every day as a developer.
I dont expect them to last forever though, so Im sure they will eventually fail. Others say they get about a year out of them and Im doing much better than that.

I have a backup I picked up from Goodwill a few years back, too. There's just no going to any other keyboard after a Microsoft Natural Elite.
Paired with a Pro Intellimouse to replace the Intellimouse Explorer I bought in 1999, too. The few years I had to use other mice between my Explorer breaking and the Pro coming out were not a great time. The Razer Deathadder 2013 was somewhat close, but it pinched my palm under its stupidly design rear and it started double-clicking within 6 months. The Pro Intellimouse is just perfect.
Mine is probably around 10 years old. I put a keyboard skin over it because I have sweaty hands. I have replaced it twice and I'm always amazed how it looks brand new when I take the old skin off.
The buttons are really poor quality.
Didn't know Microsoft made things crappier with time.

You're far better off with a simple mechanical keyboard that uses high quality switches.
