I recommend giving the newer keyboard a physical test-drive at a store or just be prepared to exercise the return option.

The Ergo 4000 has been my go-to for seven years. I had telepathic command of all of its keys. However, when I "upgraded" to the newer ergonomic keyboard, I didnt have this command anymore. It is hard to explain...the key travel is a bit more shallow, and the taper of the keys from the top of the keyboard to the bottom is smoother and less punctuated. Imagine stairsteps which have a larger height difference between each step vs a ramp. I prefer the former. I ended up returning the newer KB and am still using the 4000. It isnt technically broken, but it is *very* worn out.

Ironically, the MS sculpt has even less key travel, but yet I adapted to it well, but not so with the new ergo. However, the sculpt doesnt have a number pad, which is a huge no-no for my work. So I ended up returning it as well.

Tl;dr - go try the new one out and form your own opinion. Comfort is very subjective.

Good deal. Great keyboard and very comfy. Only negative is being wired. If only this is wireless.

How is it better?

I love all the extra buttons on my 4000.

I wish I could buy more when it was $10
Much better/lighter key action, better ergonomics, and narrower, which makes a huge ergonomic difference if you mouse on the right side. Its also wireless which is a nice bonus.

I did not like the separate Numpad on the Sculpt, but that's just a personal preference. Some people love it since they may not use it at all and can just put it safely to the side, freeing up desk space.

For this new Ergonomic keyboard, I do find the delete key that is right above backspace to be an odd choice. I haven't use it yet so not sure if it would bother me, but it's strange.

Do yourself a favor, look at how much it is to buy a new 4000. They discontinued them in favor of this model, and people like me are going crazy when our boards break and we try this replacement. It's nothing like the feel of the 4000.

I just last week spent about $200 delivered for a new open box 4000 and considered myself lucky to find that deal. I spilled an iced tea on my other board - RIP - and tried the new one for a good while - its no substitute.
Are they really that much? I own two 4000s and recently switched back a normal mechanical keyboard. Are there no better alternatives even for $200?

No, the MS Sculpt is better in every way. I had a hoard of stashed 4000s and I sold them all and bought 5 Sculpts.

They are about $50 on sale (get it without the crappy bundled mouse)
I like it but something starts going wrong after about six months, and after a year it starts missing keystrokes entirely. The WiFi adapter burns out or something. I got sick of buying them over and over again. I kept thinking it was low battery, but it's not, it's just the wireless starts working worse and worse over time no matter what.

Wow, I sold my new-in-box 4000s for ~$50, including the rare wireless version. Somebody got a great deal.

Ive experienced that when I have the dongle plugged right next to a USB stick or something transmitting data. (USB3 is known to interfere with radio signals) So make sure thats not happening before you toss the keyboard. Or just try a short USB extension cable to isolate the dongle better and see if that fixes it

I really havent had any problems other than that, using it every day as a developer.
I dont expect them to last forever though, so Im sure they will eventually fail. Others say they get about a year out of them and Im doing much better than that.

I've been using the Microsoft Ergonomic Natural Elite keyboard for almost 22 years.

Same here. Bought in 1999, typing on it now.
I have a backup I picked up from Goodwill a few years back, too. There's just no going to any other keyboard after a Microsoft Natural Elite.

Paired with a Pro Intellimouse to replace the Intellimouse Explorer I bought in 1999, too. The few years I had to use other mice between my Explorer breaking and the Pro coming out were not a great time. The Razer Deathadder 2013 was somewhat close, but it pinched my palm under its stupidly design rear and it started double-clicking within 6 months. The Pro Intellimouse is just perfect.

reading all these comments, now i'm scared my 12 year old 4000 will die... it even survived a mountain dew spill earlier in its life (took it apart and washed it in the bathtub).
You didn't even buy a backup when it was ~$15 or maybe little bit less multiple times throughout these 12 years?

Mine is probably around 10 years old. I put a keyboard skin over it because I have sweaty hands. I have replaced it twice and I'm always amazed how it looks brand new when I take the old skin off.

Can't compare this cheaply assembled update kb to the original MS ergo kb 4000.
The buttons are really poor quality.

Didn't know Microsoft made things crappier with time.

Microsoft's "ergonomic" keyboards are the least ergonomic devices I've ever used.

You're far better off with a simple mechanical keyboard that uses high quality switches.

Yep, that's my set-up. The older 4000 wired keyboard and a wireless Logitech MX Master 3 for a mouse.
Same, until 4000 died
