I know it will be an overkill, but can this be used to build a pfsense firewall since it has 2 network ports?

Looks about the same price as Intel's upcoming NUC11, which will be $479 w/ no RAM, and otherwise very similar specs but smaller with 0 or 1 SATA drive space.

Would rather have the Intel since not familiar with this brand.

Def overkill but you can use this as pfsense. They don't list the chipset for either 2.5G port though so might want to check on that.

Anyone know if the 16GB memory included is (1) 16GB Module or (2) 8GB Modules?

Nevermind, just realized the memory is soldered to motherboard meaning you cannot expand past 16GB. Deal breaker for me.

I dont want to thread crap cause I wasn't aware of this alternative to Intel's expensive NUC so that's good to know.

But what's the advantage vs a NUC? RAM is limited to 16GB vs 64GB on the NUC, price is about the same, and the Minisforum is almost twice the size? All other specs look similar, except the Minisforum will take 2 SSD cards vs 1 for Intel.
If you need more than 16GB Ram then there is no point of discussing but I highly doubt that anything over 16GB will actually be useful for that Quad Core CPU inside as it has limited performance for apps which may require more than 16GB Ram, say 4K video editing.
Now, this is coming with 16GB Ram installed which is saving for around $60. Secondly, this is LPDDR4 which is normally faster than the 3200 MHz Ram and can boost the performance of the Intel Iris Xe IGP.

I'm looking for a mini PC for a virtualization lab environment. For my use case, memory is more of a concern than CPU. I believe the i5-1135G7 is more than enough for my use case, but I can't be capped at 16GB of memory. If this had a 32GB memory option for slightly more or the memory wasn't soldered I'd be all over this.

Just get the NUC 11, should be out in October, it's $30 cheaper but doesn't come with RAM, but at least you can choose your own up to 64GB dual channel.

NUC 11 also has a second NVME slot, but it's 2240 so not sure how useful that is (drives are pricey and small).

The link you have given in the 1st page for NUC 11, have you checked the specification?
It does not have a 2nd NVMe slot, it has a 2nd M.2 2242 slot which has SATA speed. M.2 slot does not equate to PCIe NVMe SSD support by default. It can be either PCIe NVMe or SATA III 6 Gbps and for NUC 11, the 2242 slot is SATA. Below is the spec from B&H site for storage.
Quote :
Storage and Expansion
Total Drive Bays1 x 2.5" (Internal)
SSD Slots1 x M.2 2280 PCIe x4 (Available)
1 x M.2 2242 SATA (Available)
This basically limits your maximum storage expandability as 2242 slots are normally capped at 1TB and at that size, they're costlier than 2280 counterparts, for both SATA III and PCIe.
On the other hand, this Mini PC has two 2x2.5" Bay. 2.5" SATA III SSD can be available up to 4TB and they are cheaper than M.2 SATA III SSDs for same capacity.

Yeah, ok, we agree it has a not very useful 2240 slot, got it.

Is the Minisforum NVME slot gen 4 or 3, cause it doesn't say? The Intel is gen 4.

Do you work for Minisforum, cause this just doesn't seem like a good deal? Maybe at $400 it would be.

Intel NUC are known for poor quality. Mine came with a broken ethernet and USB port. Something to keep in mind.

Well at least there are lots of NUC reviews (nearly all good), there's almost nothing on this Shenzhen vendor despite the OP's claims they're well known.

I doubt there are mature freebsd drivers for it. The windows drivers for the 2.5g lan just barely got stable. Tons of people had issues early on.
