On HOB filters like the Hagen AquaClear you essentially have a basket for your filter media. You have sponges for the bio and mechanical portion of the filtering and pouches of carbon for the other stuff. You do replace the carbon pouches, but wring out the sponges in tank water from a water change in a bucket to get the gunk off and put it back. There's more versatility because you can choose what to put in the filter and swap stuff out with say ceramic bio-media, phosphate removing products to combat algae, etc. Then if you want aesthetics or higher filtering capacity most people will go with a canister filter that they can hide in the stand.
This is all pertaining to fresh water. You probably don't want to get a box kit for salt water unless it's a fish only tank and bear in mind that a 20G is only good enough for one "Nemo" and no "Dory" as surgeonfish requires a lot more space.
Also, the lids are fine if you like the aesthetic, but the lights, even their LED lights will not support coral or most live plants unless you want to grow low light plants like cryptocorynes or Anubias. Forget about the grass type/carpeting plants or any plants that are any color but green.
The quality of the heaters isn't as good. If it fails it can kill all your fish wether it's from not keeping the temp up, overheating your tank, or an electrical short.
If it's your first aquarium it's not the worst thing out there, not many newbies out there buying ADA tanks and equipment for their fish tank. My first tank was a 10 gallon "kit" from PetSmart and upgraded within 6 months. Kept the 10 gallon as a quarantine tank.
If you want to see the bougie stuff for planted tanks check out AquaForestAquarium or BucePlant. If you want to know more about keeping salt water visit ReefCentral or Nano-Reef forums and for freshwater check out plantedtank.net. I'm sure there are other resources, but those are the ones I remember and that have been around for decades.
If you want to successfully keep aquariums, the I suggest do your research, figure out what you want in a tank before you buy anything.
I want to upgrade to a 75 gallon tank and this is a deal but not if it's gonna leak all over my living room
