Adding filter, lid, LED to the base $9.99 tank will bring it up to $40. 10 Gal aquarium kit is being sold for $37 which includes all the above.

Sure, but all the accessories in the kit are junk.

Good deal. I've been looking to get a larger tank for my hermit crab. I have a terrarium one with a screen mesh but I can always fashion something at this price.

Because they are. Ebay Chinese junk would probably be better.
Just because they are sold at Walmart it doesn't mean that they are bad. I have more than 3 aquarium at my house (75Gal, 30, 20, 10, 1.5) and the 10 Gal one is the one I got from Walmart because I needed something immediately for Juvies. It's been more than 18 months and I don't see any problem yet.

That aren't. They just arent pro quality. You can keep a clean, healthy community of fish using these aqueon kits. The dude commenting is just one of those people… like the dudes on laptop posts who come on to talk about how everything aside from their homemade machine is garbage.

For added peace of mind I would pull the silicone, and use something of better quality. I've kept fish for 20 plus years, and I've had some seals last years and others crap the bed after 6 month's to a year.

Quality and versatility of the products. I used to work at an aquarium store, so the HOB (hang on back) filters on most of the kits have throwaways filters, which means that you're throwing away the beneficial bacteria that lives on the filters. Yes, there is beneficial bacteria in the tank, but the sponges have more surface area for the bacteria to grow and live on. The more the merrier.

On HOB filters like the Hagen AquaClear you essentially have a basket for your filter media. You have sponges for the bio and mechanical portion of the filtering and pouches of carbon for the other stuff. You do replace the carbon pouches, but wring out the sponges in tank water from a water change in a bucket to get the gunk off and put it back. There's more versatility because you can choose what to put in the filter and swap stuff out with say ceramic bio-media, phosphate removing products to combat algae, etc. Then if you want aesthetics or higher filtering capacity most people will go with a canister filter that they can hide in the stand.

This is all pertaining to fresh water. You probably don't want to get a box kit for salt water unless it's a fish only tank and bear in mind that a 20G is only good enough for one "Nemo" and no "Dory" as surgeonfish requires a lot more space.

Also, the lids are fine if you like the aesthetic, but the lights, even their LED lights will not support coral or most live plants unless you want to grow low light plants like cryptocorynes or Anubias. Forget about the grass type/carpeting plants or any plants that are any color but green.

The quality of the heaters isn't as good. If it fails it can kill all your fish wether it's from not keeping the temp up, overheating your tank, or an electrical short.

If it's your first aquarium it's not the worst thing out there, not many newbies out there buying ADA tanks and equipment for their fish tank. My first tank was a 10 gallon "kit" from PetSmart and upgraded within 6 months. Kept the 10 gallon as a quarantine tank.

If you want to see the bougie stuff for planted tanks check out AquaForestAquarium or BucePlant. If you want to know more about keeping salt water visit ReefCentral or Nano-Reef forums and for freshwater check out plantedtank.net. I'm sure there are other resources, but those are the ones I remember and that have been around for decades.

If you want to successfully keep aquariums, the I suggest do your research, figure out what you want in a tank before you buy anything.

If you want saltwater then I suggest doing some research on nano-reef or reefcentral forums. That is, unless you just want a fish in a box. If you want coral, inverts, etc. know what you're getting into. The lights in these things are only good for seeing into the tank and hardly close to supporting life like coral or plants.

Any suggestions for an inexpensive stand for the 20 or 29 gallon tanks? My kid's fair won goldfish has bloomed into an increasingly expensive hobby.

can anyone comment on the quality of these tanks? (aqueon)
I want to upgrade to a 75 gallon tank and this is a deal but not if it's gonna leak all over my living room
You could put the aquarium in another room, this saving your living room.

Thinking about a gift... Would this $9 10 gallon tank and MarineLand Penguin Bio-Wheel Power Filter ($8) be overkill for 1 betta fish?
