Every time one of these comes up I'm so confused as to whether I should buy it. So far I have gathered it must be from japan, must be IH, must be 3-5 cups. What else? What's the gold standard model to get I'm tired of waiting for a deal on these things and want some good rice! /rant

10 cup is tooo big for most people. I have a 5.5 cup and wish I had a 3 cup. The counter footprint is smaller. Plenty of rice for our 2-person household. Though someone at some point said the 3 cup doesn't make quite as good rice as the 5.5 cup version. I don't know if that's true but it always struck fear in me.

Unless you have a big family or are eating way too much rice/carbs, I recommend holding out for the 5.5 or maybe 3 cup version. It's easy to click and buy this, then have a giant rice cooker on your counter forever, or lug a giant rice cooker on and off the counter.\

......

That all said, does anyone know if the fancy expensive Zojirushis (or other brands) make passable sushi rice? All I need is 'decent' sushi rice. The fancy ones have a 'sushi' setting, but never heard anyone talk about the results, ever.

Your pressure cooker almost certainly does not cook rice perfectly. It might make rice that you're happy with. It might make decent rice quickly. It might be convenient to not have a dedicated rice cooker. But it is not making perfectly cooked rice

I've never had a problem using the sushi rice setting. I have Zojirushi NP-NVC18. For the person who says "rice is rice", then it doesn't matter.

For others who care, the first step is using short-grain rice.

A nice link with instructions: https://www.chopstickchronicles.c...ushi-rice/

I don't know this one. But I have used my zojirushi IH rice cooker for almost 8years. It has the setting for long grain and it works great on wild rice.
Some other people just don't know how to read directions. People just need to make sure the water to rice ratio is correct. I have the NWC10 and it makes perfect rice every time!!

I've tried multiple rice cookers but none of them seems to handle long-grain rice like Basmati.
Try the insignia. Works good for me. Max I have tried is 4 cups but regularly do 2 cups.

Is this induction or just a heat plate?
Heat plate it's worth it to pay a little more for when Kohls has a sale for the induction unless you want wait an hour for rice

I just bought the Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 one hour ago. Should I buy this instead?
I owned zcc10 for 12 years and switched to this one on launch. Zcc's cook time is based on how much rice you put in there. This one is a little different. A same choice always cook for a same amount of time no matter how much rice you put in. Unami is nice for rice quality but takes time (72 min). Never tried other functions. And never cooked more than 2 cups even with a big family gathering.

With a family of 2 adults and two kids, I cook 1 and a half cup every day. Including next day's lunch for 3. So most of time you don't need that much capacity for rice alone. If you would like to steam or slow cooking, you may want the bigger size.

My family are a big fan of these your of rice cooker and especially this brand. I use my instapot to cook my rice and almost everything else. I honest can't see why this is better. So in "my opinion" I would recommend to save the money on a pressure cooker instead.

Someone had suggested in the comments of a youtube video that the rice sits in water to soak before it actually cooks. That is what could be taking so long. Not sure if that is true, but sounds logical. I didn't really want to get the 10 cup but need to start making multiple small meals each day for three day stretches. Not a fan of big portion cooking.

Not saying what is better because I wouldn't know, but I do know my pressure cooker cooks rice perfectly and also, well, cooks a bunch of other stuff. I don't see why you'd get this if you didn't have either. That's just my uninformed opinion though.

That's true. Also what I did with my old zcc to cook better barley and wheat mixed rice.

note, rice cooker measurements are 1) precooked volume of rice, and 2) not "cups" by the US definition. Each "cup" is about 0.8 US cups. But that still means that a 5cup cooker can make 4 cups uncooked=~12 cups cooked rice. It's good for 3-4 days, so it's not insane to get through that much, but you need to eat a lot of rice. To justify 10c (8 US cups dry=24c cooked), you either need to be asian, have a big family, or both.

I love my zojirushi IH rice cooker but I'm on my 4th bowl in 11 years and getting close to needing #5. Their nonstick coating only lasts a couple years and that's if you baby it, which I do. Replacement bowls are almost $100 which sucks, but it really sucks when the non stick coating starts coming off and I need to decide between stretching a little longer and my health, that stuff isn't good to ingest.
