I've been out of the PC building game for awhile but my old hand built 2nd gen i7 is getting long of tooth. Does Hynix compare well with Samsung? I've always been a Samsung and WD loyalist but it seems that winds are blowing differently lately.

Amazon is offering the SK hynix Gold S31 1TB for $84 and with the 5% coupon on the product page, that takes it down to $80.

I cant comment too much comparing it to samsung and wd. I will say SK Hynix pretty much has no support so if you have to RMA one of these youre SOL.

I own one of these and love it though. Compared to Samsung/WD, these sk hynix nvme ssd's have like the lowest power consumption, cheaper by a bit and are very fast comparable speeds. Samsung would be the highest power consumption for their ssd's and more expensive but probably with signifcantly better support.

With that said, ive loved mine and have had no issues. From what I understand, the company just has like no support.

You have to kind of decide what you value.

These days with computer components that's a very tough call. There are indicators that storage may trend downward... but there's just as many warnings right now that inventory problems will remain challenged so buy what you need when it's available.

My position has been to only buy what I can use immediately, and even then I beat myself up very hard about "do I really need this?"

To make an analogy using the age of your system (no judgement from me, as my newest CPU is a 2nd gen!) this is equivalent to buying direct from Crucial or Micron back in the day. Great bang for buck, the DIYer's purchase of choice, but certainly not the gold-standard of customer service (assuming you'd ever need it).

Good luck!

Solid drive. Very tempting. Could use some extra cache in my Unraid machine.

I think last time this was on sale was around $90 so this is a good deal for a reputable brand.

Thanks!

it works. I have XPS 8930 and replaced micron's 256GB (which came with the desktop) with this 1TB. Has been working well.

I had 1 fail on me and it was kind of a hassle, they made me go through Amazon, then only after Amazon said they couldn't do anything. They had me go through their website again and submit for an RMA, then they created a shipping label. Just sent it in yesterday and waiting to get a refund or replacement to see how this transaction finalizes.

Was the RMA request on their site via email or is there a web page? If the latter, then it would be useful to mention that in every SK Hynix thread so people can bypass the futile Amazon contact. They used to have a web page that wasn't well known to submit an RMA but they removed that a few months ago. Wondering if they brought it back.

If you have a URL or email that you used to contact them directly, please post so others can keep it in case they need it in future.

PS: They should know very well by now that Amazon doesn't handle RMA warranty issues for vendors other than their own return window applicable to any product. The fact that they still insist people go via Amazon does not sound like good faith dealing to me.
