I have varicose veins, I noticed when I wore my Merrell Jungle Moc shoes that I could shop longer and my feet/legs didn't ache as much. Then I had a podiatrist tell me that my arches were "falling" and recommended the Superfeet. Took out the Merrell insoles and put in the Superfeet (they take a couple of days to get used to them), and now I won't wear shoes without arch support.
My son ran XC in high school and college, he also swears by the Superfeet (orange); he started working retail and figured his athletic shoes (no orthotics) would be fine, he came home complaining about how much his legs ached. Got him some Merrell's, put in the Superfeet and no complaints (same response with another son working retail, and husband that walks on concrete all day).

I've been using my custom insoles for 12 years now and they're still structurally sound, had the pads replaced by a cobbler for $20 a couple of years ago. That said, I use greens for my less-used shoes and my wife uses them in her work shoes. Greens are still pretty good compared to junk insoles and there is definitely a noticeable difference, but you're going to need to replace these things every 6 months for heavy use to possibly every 1.5 years for light use.
Do note that it takes some time for your feet to adjust to actually being supported properly. Took a couple of weeks of aching feet for me to adjust to my customs even, but I haven't experienced foot pain even on my feet 8 hours a day ever since.
IIRC the cost of my customs would have been something in the $700-$800 range without insurance and that's just for the insoles themselves, not the fitting. With how long they've lasted though, the cost is right around the MSRP of annual superfeet or possibly even cheaper depending on usage/wear.

Superfeet is a step up from the basic stuff and good for general use (I keep them in shoes I just wear and go). I use a brand called Aline which is about 2x the superfeet but much better support. i have a custom pair in my work shoes that I wear 8+hours a day. Most people wont notice a huge difference, but flat feet or people who over pronate will feel much better with these.
