Whelp... ouch. At the beginning of last year my 15x8TB array ran out of space (I didn't expect 2020.... to be 2020), and had been planning to go to 15x14TB, and had purchased one 14TB to test for $190 around black Friday 2020 I think. After figuring out it is a GREAT drive for arrays... and also saving up a ton of money to get a bunch more of these... CHIA happened. I ended up spending an average of $360 per drive for the other 14 drives I needed, which at the time was an AMAZING price (most of the time all large HDDs were out of stock EVERYWHERE, and selling for $500+ where ever you could find them), and supposedly things were just gonna get worse.
I am picking up a few of these for spares... plus to decrease my average per drive... lol... rationalization FTW.
Sort of. Not sure an extra 2TB for $40 is a great deal.
Personally I'd rather have the 14TB at (very) slightly higher per-TB cost and save the physical space in my server, so situation dependent but definitely a better overall solution for me here. Also, the fact that when talking about the 12TB deal from last week there wasn't really a choice - you could only get two of them (unless you circumvent the limit, of course).

Agreed... density is worth a lot in a server environment where using more space to get less storage... costs WAY more.
Does anyone know if these run hot? I was reading the reviews and the complaints were that they were running hotter than the normal drives. Is this really a concern if you shuck and throw them in a case?
You can use it IN a Nas, but not AS a Nas on its own. Or you could have it plugged into a computer and set up a Windows share that would be like a very incredibly basic form of network attached storage.
Sad that prices are still this high. Not surprised considering the way everything is up, but still. Glad I loaded up a year back before the price jumps.
