I know 8GB is "good enough" but if you are buying an XPS, you don't want "good enough." Looking forward to a deal that has at least 16GB of RAM.
You can't look at available ram usage that way. The os keeps things in ram it might not need anymore in case it does again later, then frees it up if needed. Unless the applications you are actively using need it all you are fine.
My 5 year old laptop with 8gb ram had 50+ tabs or browser opened and movie watching at the same time and it was smooth. 8gb isn't going to make it noticeable for most kind of usage.

This seems like the same laptop I got through my college for twice the money. I got a $600 grant toward it and still paid more than this deal. I only got it like a week ago, should I return it??

It's been nice for my needs, very cool lil laptop, but it cost more than I can truly afford and I'm also unsure if the specs really justify the thousand bucks I paid :/

Is 8GB ram enough to connect external 4K monitor running 10+ PDF file avg 30 pages each and 10-15 Excel files 5mb each? Of course Chrome will steaming music.

Return the one from school. It's an older model with an older processor. The only benefit is the extended warranty, which you can pay for with the XPS on sale.

Seconding your advice to return the school machine. That was an objectively bad deal that the state university should be ashamed at having put in front of its students. I grabbed the 15-inch 9500 with the i7 , 16gb ram and a 1650 card for almost the same price a full 15 months ago directly from dell. I pay $7 per month now for extended warranty with next-day-on-site repairs just in case anything goes wrong. Hopefully every student got subsidized $600 toward that inflated price.

MBA is a vastly superior machine; it has dramatically better battery life and will be much, much faster. It's also completely silent with no moving parts, which means it won't get slower over time as dust gunks up the fans and vents. But it doesn't run Windows, if you care about that, and the XPS13 looks more modern with tiny bezels around the display.

MBA hands down for the processor alone.

8gb...The computer is probably paging... When the computer starts turning dumping ram content to the hard drive...
Not bad but you don't want that on a new computer.

What about tossing Linux on this instead of resource-sucking Windows?
I've done this with older models. The killer Wi-Fi will be problematic, probably.

That is not a better screen if you care about battery life.

Here we go again with another wannabe know-it-all "RAM apologist". Perhaps you're unaware of the fact that the XPS literally stands for "eXtreme Performance System," right?

The fact of the matter is that 8GB of RAM is "sufficient most of the time" for "light-duty use," which, of course, in real-world language means a lackluster machine that is sometimes "good enough" and other times leaves you disappointed (if not frustrated). Understanding that RAM is only one of several variables that impact "speed," guess what someone using a laptop with 8GB RAM has never ever said? "WOW, this machine is impressively fast!!!"

But, sure, share more of your "knowledge" with us mr. practical...
