No because I'm their system the device will show up as non TMobile. You can request to get it unlocked but no agent is going to do it basically
NOT NECESSARILY TRUE - T-Mobile has hired a third-party company to do unlocks for Best Buy phones - several participants in the original September thread reported sending proof of purchase to "T-Force" via Twitter and ending up with an unlocked phone still sealed in box. Then, to check the SIM unlock status they paid a fee to a third party site to check since other methods would have resulted in an open box. YMMV applies, but you can't say it is impossible when it has already happened a bunch of times.

I was able to request an unlock from T mobile without inserting a sim card. Does this mean that if I insert a sim card now, it will relock itself? Was hoping to give it to my brother still sealed for Xmas.
If the backend systems worked correctly then insertion of any carrier's card will result in "NO SIM RESTRICTIONS" once the phone links to Apple "activation server." Default will be a lock to the carrier who sent THAT SIM, so allow the proposed end user to put their SIM in first. If they are on an MVNO I would be in a native carrier SIM for that MVNO as locked TMo phones can run MetroPCS/Mint/Tello and locked ATT phones can run Cricket/Red Pocket etc

You can search for third parties that can verify unlock or perhaps PM the volunteer SDer who bought more than he needed from the website.

A PM to me would just trigger thread searches through this thread or the original. Why don't you PM the two people who just reported getting a sealed box phone unlocked?

Thanks for your generous offer. I have to join AARP because as much of this thread content is sticking in my memory banks - this website name just keeps escaping me and I can't search for the site name without KNOWING the site name!

I have one last experimental phone remaining. I was about to do the ATT unlock in as risky a way possible - reusing the already used (never activated w/ATT) prepaid ATT SIM card with same e-mail and phone that I used during my successful five-minute unlock. Alternatively, I could leave the box sealed and try to get an unlock from T-Mobile. If others can attest to how that happens with a Best Buy phone. Even with a Costco receipt showing $750 per phone I still didn't try to request an unlock with a phone still sealed in the box. I supposed I could save a couple of Best Buy e-mails as PDF and say "I used my upgrade to buy an Xmas gift - it is paid in full - please unlock for me?"

Good luck to all - clearly people have different motives as they take these different approaches - I will report back if I go ahead and use ATT unlock method this weekend.

I'm just curious to see what the website will show when people said that their phones got unlocked without activated first. So I'm still waiting for someone to PM me with their IMEI.. Smilie Dan, good luck with your ATT unlock method that you're about to pull.. Smilie

Or, maybe bad luck and I see what happens when my cousin puts in his SIM and requests unlock as an ultra-devoted ATT customer on the "First Responder" plan that even puts his calls through during disasters...

How did you get notified that your unlock request went through? With my 13 Mini I got a tweet after four days from my original T-Force rep telling me he had followed up with the third party and they told him unlock was "processed." I still had to shove in the Visible card and wait a couple of minutes for Apple's activation server to update the status inside the phone - something was also happening on the back end - no telling what. Point being, a "flex" phone should not report back as SIM locked from Apple's database unless/until a SIM card is inserted...

I think FLEX phone at least needs to connect to apple server for it to do its thing to get it unlocked. Or else, the phone just stuck on the FLEX state until it able to connect to apple server.

T-force tweeted back to me and said that it was successfully unlocked. I'll probably just end up opening the phone and seeing if it's truly unlocked.

Since you have 2 phones.. at least try 1 to see if it true, then you know the 2nd one is unlocked.
