Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

Good deal, you can get the companion pass pretty easily now with this card. Annual fee isn't that much either and there are ways to get the annual fee covered
Companion pass is dope if you can get this early on in the first year. They normally give you companion pass the rest of the year you earn it, plus an additional year. So if you can hit Jan/Feb you essentially get companion pass for 2 years. I earned one with the personal/business cards a while back and my wife and I enjoyed it tremendously!

So to ensure that 100k is received in one calendar year, I should not spend $2000 until January 1st and then try to spend $12k as fast as I can?
I currently have 35k in points but I don't think I could spend $12k in the next 2 months and then it would only be for 1 calendar year instead of being 1.5 calendar years.

You can start spending sometime in December, the points get awarded after billing statement end date. So as long as you spend it right after the last statement of the year, you should be fine.

Just to clarify. Typically the points post a couple days after your statement. So if your statement date is December 12th, then you can finish up the spend anytime after December 12th and those points will post in 2022.

So it is not based on when I first received the card? For example, if I apply for the card now, and it arrives by the end of October, you're saying I should hold off from buying anything with the new card until mid-December?

You have 90 days to hit the spend. You are better off waiting until End of November to apply (expiration Dec 7th). Then don't make any purchases until the 1st statement closes, which should be 30-35 days AFTER your application is approved.

Actually you can get the card now. Spend less than 2000, let's say 1800, before the statement in December, spend the rest after December statement, you will get the bonus points with January statement. Make sure not to spend ore than 1800 before Dec statement
