Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).

Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:

- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.

- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)

- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.

The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.

Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

Lmao you seem to have all of the answers. Why did all of the sudden the employees stopped protesting? And why were other airlines not impacted because I'm sure southwest isn't the only airline mandating the vaccine.

The employees stopped protesting because they were in violation of the Railway Labor Act. If there was a storm in Florida, why wasn't Delta or American or United affected? They all have major routes into the Florida beach/ Disney Mecca. Wake up. There wasn't a storm anywhere near Florida.

For those who had Rapid Rewards accounts open on Dec. 31, 2020, Southwest effectively lowered the requirements for earning the Companion Pass in 2021 by depositing 25,000 Companion Pass qualifying points in accounts earlier this year, meaning you'll only need 100,000 points to qualify for Companion Pass by the end of this year if you had an account open at the end of last year.

Did everyone get the 25k points? I looked at my points and don't see the points added this year.

BTW, these are not actual usable points, these are only companion pass qualification points. You can look at your companion pass staus wheel

Yep, as noted above, they're not usable points, just qualifying points. Look for an email from on or around 1/15/21 entitled "Earning A-List & Companion Pass is now easier" for all the details.

Don't do it. APR is high for this card (even with good credit score). They're canceling flights and enforcing point expiration dates. You'll be signing up to pay them an annual fee and interest for points you can't do shit with.

Just received a rapid rewards statement and it shows both my wife and I have 25,000 points earned toward a companion pass. We haven't flown nor have been cardholders in over two years. Anyone know why we received these points? Thanks
SW added 25k points toward qualification in 2021 for all SW rapid reward members.

This is the most silly post in this thread. People that worry about APR shouldn't be using CC period. People that take advantages of the sign up bonus are people who pay off their balance every month. I have never looked at an APR when signing up for a CC.
SW canceled flights for about 5 days few weeks ago because employee protest and called out in bunches.SW is back to normal now.
Speaking of points, I've been abusing the shit out of my SW points for the past year using my companion pass. I started off with 140k+ points and me and the wife's been traveling and I'm only down to 85k+ points. Wife is about to get her companion pass in 2022. Rinse and repeat.

We plan to apply this card now, hopefully get it early November then spend about 12K plus 8K to 10K in nov and dec, by December 31. Do you guys think we can get the 125K point by end of 2021 to eligible for 2022 companion travel ?

Our goal is to get companion pass to use in 2022. What would be the best and quickest option ?

Thanks
The important thing is when SW will post your points.
If you had a Rapid Reward account before 2021 SW gave everyone 25k points toward qualification. So if you were to spend $12k quickly you would have earned the 100k+25k= 125k right away. So hopefully SW will post your points by Dec and you will have Companion Pass.
Seems like a wasted to me though. Try to earn your Companion Pass as fast as you can in 2022 so you can have all of 2022 and 2023.

Can I apply but not try to get the bonus point until Jan 2022 because I got my bonus points on Jan 2020 & the card was canceled on dec 2020?

You'll get the companion pass for 2022 and 2023 if you time it correctly. and you have the entire next year to spend $25k; there are easy ways to get these points without spending as well; it might not be appropriate to say it here

Can you PM me on how to time it correctly to get CP for both 2022 and 2023? Sounds like some have indicated if you get CP early in 2022 you won't get it for 2023 too

Anyone know what to make of this statement on SW webpage titled "2021 Rapid Rewards® Qualifying Transactions for 2022 Status"

"Credit card points posted to your Rapid Rewards account in 2021, including bonus points, will count toward qualifying for a 2022 Companion Pass."

Sounds like they are going to count all CC points posted in 2021as 2022 qualifying points.

Both my wife and I have a southwest card already. Can one of us cancel our card and then get a new card to get this bonus? I also have the chase sapphire reserve card and she also has the chase sapphire preferred card. What's the best strategy in this situation? I searched around and wasn't having luck finding the answer because it usually assumes you don't already have one of these cards.

You and your wife count independent. One of you can cancel your southwest card(s) and wait a few days before you apply for new one. Sapphires have no bearing. Also Assuming you are under 5/24 and applying after 24 months of southwest bonus posting. We both too have the sapphires. Also, southwest business and personal cards count independent. So if you have the business card, you can keep it and apply for personal.

You are interpreting the statement incorrectly.

"2022 Companion Pass" means that the pass is good for the entirety of 2022 - meaning that you earned (or 'earned' via CC) the points that trigger your receiving the pass during 2021. The pass has always worked that way - you earn points and get the pass for the remainder of that year as a courtesy, and then for the entirety of the next calendar year.
