Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

Well I wish I had read this thread before I got the card. I put $2000 on it already. I didn't realize that I could delay the start and basically get 2 years of companion passes. The bill hasn't been sent yet, but everything is already paid off. Is there anything I can do to delay this, or do I have to suck it up and let it be a learning moment? If not, what would be the effective time of my companion pass? Luckily my fiancé has an LLC, so we can easily swap the process over to her next time.
So all of this is new to me... And I obviously screwed up my timing. Has anyone had any luck getting them to delay the points or something along those lines? If not, what is going to happen for my companion pass eligibility? Since I already spent and paid off the first $2k on the card, I'm going to get the first 50k points in 2021, but the rest will hit in 2022.
Sorry if I missed this - anyone know HOW to use the 2x Free early bird checkins? I'm guessing you charge it to the card then get a refund, but it's not clear to me…

Now your ootion to get 2022-23 companion pass is
After December statement finish spending the rest to $12000 to get the other 50K bonus in 2022. Also get a sw business performance card for 80K bonus in 2022 after spending 5000K
Good luck.
This is what I am planning. Can you confirm, if this will work for trying to get the Free companion pass for next year
I got the card in October and my statement ended today
October statement (Oct 8 to Nov 8) - Spent $1700
November Statement (Nov 9-Dec 8) - will spend $100
December statement (Dec 9- Jan 8) - Start spending like crazy as I will earn 50K points for spending $2000 in the first 3 months and rest towards free companion pass
Is my understanding correct? After November statement is generated on Dec 8, I can start spending and dont need to wait for January as the statement is going to get generated in January and and in that month, I will see 50K points - which should count for FY 2022.
Can someone confirm if my understanding is correct? If not, please guide me
Thanks,
JR
Yes. Make sure not to spend more than 1800 before December statement and don't payoff the balance in December. Just to be extra safe payoff your December Statement balance in January. Good Luck

Thanks for the info! Since I would have to do the business card from my fiancé's LLC, would that cause any issues for her to be the one to do this next time? Like I know we can only do the bonus every 2 years per card type (personal vs business)... But would she be blocked from doing it next time given that it would be a card for the same business?
And assuming that's a no-go... since I'd be easily getting the 125k points within a year... would I at least be getting a companion pass for 2022 (but just miss out on 2023)?

Sorry for the noob questions. I hope the answers help others that screwed up like I did.
To get the pass for current and following year (2022-23) 1250000. points need to be posted in same CALANDER YEAR and not in one year.
Also' you can try getting the business card in your name if you do any "consulting" to the business.

Getting Companion pass for 2022-23 needs posting 125000 rapid rewards after 1/1/2022. For that:
Best path: Get SW performance Bus card for 80K points and any personal SW card for minimum 50K.
Finish spending bonus threashhold limits (5000 and 2000) only after the December statements so that the bonus points post only in/after January statements. You can spend upto 4800 and 1800 before December statements if you choose because just the bonus points (130K) are enough for the pass. Make sure not to hit the threshholds before December statements.
2nd path: Get one of the personal cards for 100000K bonus. In that case you should spend atleast 12000 after December statement to get the 100K bonus and 12K spend points, total 112K points in 2022.
For the remaining 13K you need
Either spend another 13K on the card or earn some points by referring someone or any combination (Starting January referring bonus may or may not be current 20K).
This will be my 4th consecutive Companion pass and will be getting in 1st 10 days of January.
Hope the above summerized info helps someone.
PS: After you are approved for the card(s) you can call chase for expedited delivery and change due date to 1st of the month to give you more time to spend in December.
Doesn't this mean that if you apply after 12/1, you can start spending all the way without worry at all? Since I assume your closing date can't be before 1/1/2022.

Yes, if going single card path. If you are going two card path applying earlier will give you more spending time.
Yes, if going single card path. If you are going two card path applying earlier will give you more spending time.
I was thinking of applying for both cards in early Dec so they can have closing date in 2022. 5k (80k pts) on business and 2k (50k pts) on personal to get the companion pass ASAP. Then just leisurely hit the 12k mark for the last 50k throughout 2022.
This allows me to spend freely in December, get pass in January, and finally get all the bonus points without rushing to 12k.

You're only choice is to get a business card. Your personal 50k(2nd 50k) + your business bonus will get you to 125k. Sorry you are SOL on your first 50k points
Damn, I got my Southwest and started spending already but then I looked at my JetBlue Barclay account and I'm still $2000 spending short of reaching $6k/12 months to get my 100k points. Lots of manufacturer spending I have to do. Gonna suck it up and pay my property taxes this year using a CC by paying the surcharge.
A thought I had recently was even though you get 20000 points for a referral bonus for someone right now, that amount won't apply towards the needed extra points after the 12k spend since it's not this calendar year. May have to wait until 2022 to refer even though this deal will be expired for them.
You'll get the companion pass for 2022 and 2023 if you time it correctly. and you have the entire next year to spend $25k; there are easy ways to get these points without spending as well; it might not be appropriate to say it here
