Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

Someone recently stated that they were not able to get both the personal card bonus and the business card bonus. Is that really the case?
Also, why is the recommendation to wait a few days between applying for these two cards?
I applied for the business card, and then the personal card less than a minute later in 2018. Got approved for both immediately.
This time I'd like to do both for spouse. The application looks a little tougher now unless you have a real operating business.
I'm not sure we will make it happen this time 😞
Quick question. For companion pass. I understand we have to earn 125k in calendar year to qualify for it. For someone like me, it will take me many months to get there. Can I use my earned points. Lets say 10k. But they still classify under earned points for the year. Or do you need 125k in your account at the time to qualify for companion pass?
Good deal, you can get the companion pass pretty easily now with this card. Annual fee isn't that much either and there are ways to get the annual fee covered
Ways to get annual fee covered? Please explain "ways" it can be done?? Thanks
I know the Chase Sapphire Preferred promo is dead, but how is this deal compared to that one for someone who maybe travels once a year? Both offered 100k points. This one require quite a bit more spending. Thanks.

Sorry if that was confusing
You can use your earned points immediately and they will still be qualifying points for the companion pass. You don't need the balance to be 125000 but earning to be 125000 in the same calander year. Hope it clarifies.

Thanks for clarification. Just to make sure.. So it can help other readers too.
Example:
1/22 - Get 50k points
2/22 - Use 25K points
6/22 - Get 75k points
Even though my balance on 6/22 next year will be 100k points. Since I have earned 125k points in 2022. I will qualify to receive companion pass?

Cliff, did you apply for personal or business card first? Do you have a large business or??
Business card first. Still haven't applied for personal yet (since we opened a SW card in Jan 2020 and need to wait 24 months to be eligible for the bonus again)
You'll get the companion pass for 2022 and 2023 if you time it correctly. and you have the entire next year to spend $25k; there are easy ways to get these points without spending as well; it might not be appropriate to say it here
Would appreciate it if you could provide some details. Can you please DM?
For those who had Rapid Rewards accounts open on Dec. 31, 2020, Southwest effectively lowered the requirements for earning the Companion Pass in 2021 by depositing 25,000 Companion Pass qualifying points in accounts earlier this year, meaning you'll only need 100,000 points to qualify for Companion Pass by the end of this year if you had an account open at the end of last year.
Is there somewhere we can see if we have these points? I assume they're not just regular RR points that one can redeem for flights, because I never some an additional 25k points go into my account.

Wouldn't business card fall under the same family?
Wouldn't business card fall under the same family?
Ahh gotcha . So if I apply for business right now, it should most likely be approved ?
