Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

We've been getting one personal card and one business to receive bonus from both cards. We alternate the cards between my wife and I every two years. We've had companion pass for the last 8 years almost. I'll be applying for the cards on 12/5 so that the statement closes in January 2022 and points post in 2022.
I am about to apply today 12/1 but since I read your post (thank you) , should I just wait until 12/5 to be more safe? After I get approved, can I start using the card or should I wait for January 1st?
Should i also apply for business as sole proprietor and if approved, do i not need to spend $12k for the next 12 months? please advise.
I need your info! I have so many questions about this!!!
Well, I was being facetious in my reply to the idiot who said that credit cards are a scam.
but... Through applying for credit cards to earn bonus miles, etc, I've earned a lot of miles. To be fair, I don't travel a ton, but it's been enough. There are TONS of blogs and other resources around the internet about stuff like this. Google things like 'award travel' and go down the rabbit hole.
Good deal, you can get the companion pass pretty easily now with this card. Annual fee isn't that much either and there are ways to get the annual fee covered
One round trip flight per year more than covers the annual fee. I realize it depends how much you spend but I spend way too much on sports and concerts lol. College football season tickets and the traveling that goes with it not to mention my annual donation. Atlanta Braves and United season tickets, Atlanta Hawks 10 game season ticket. Then in non Covid years about 20 concerts.
We normally wait a few days into December to apply so that we can ensure the statement closes in January 2022 and points post for 2022. We purchase starting in December.
We apply for personal and business card (you can use your SSN instead of EIN) so then we just have to meet the spend for the points bonuses. The current bonuses between the two cards should get you the 125,000 points so you don't have to spend the $12,000 for this deal's card.
It just comes down to if you want to do it with two cards or one and what you can spend.
Also if you don't have any trips planned for Q1 2022 then you have time. We have a trip in February that we'd like to use the companion pass so we want to have the points accumulated before then so that I can add her as companion. If we didn't have any trips or couldn't travel, then you technically have more time to accumulate the $12,000 spend on a single card.
I am planning to buy house 6 months down the line, I am only guy earning, applying new credit and spending/repaying those credit will affect me for house mortgage anyway?
Just Google "pay federal taxes using credit card". For now you can pay any amount 1040ES towards your 2021 taxes which you will get back when you file your 2021 tax return.
Question about those with a Security Freeze. Typically when I apply for a credit card, the screen tells me they will get back with me and then send me a code I can use to unfreeze for them to check credit before issuing the card (this process takes time). Does anyone know if I should apply a certain time in advance of Dec 7 to allow time for this in order to qualify for the 100,000 promotion?
Just to clarify. Typically the points post a couple days after your statement. So if your statement date is December 12th, then you can finish up the spend anytime after December 12th and those points will post in 2022.
So when is it the best time to get the card? And when to do the $3000 spending?

Get card now. Complete spending as soon in 2022 as possible.. to get the Companion pass for the rest of 22, and all of 23.
You can ask them when your statement date is if you call in after you get your card.
