Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).

Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:

- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.

- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)

- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)

- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.

The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.

Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

No, your statement date will be around December 23rd. So if you spend now, those points will post for 2021.

Alrighty now ... just applied, and received instant approval. Will wait to see what my statement closing date will be, which will determine when I will start spending.

In addition to buying Costco gift cards (for future use), also monitor when Staples has Visa gift cards on sale with no fee. You can buy up to 5 x $200 cards a day, or $1000/day. Go all seven days of the week and spend $7K.

[added] And dang, it instantly showed up on my Chase account! Due date of 2 Feb shown.
FYI: Fee free $200 Visa gift cards go on sale Sunday 12 Dec at Staples. Limit 5 cards/day, so you can buy $7000 worth in one week. They have this sale frequently, as does Office Depot.

Doesn't this trigger a chase shutdown for buying gift cards this volume?

While I haven't bought $7K in a week, I have made multiple $1K purchases in one week on my Business Ink card, early in its life. At the time, it had only a $3K limit, and they took their time posting my payments. But at least at that level it was not an issue, as they more than doubled my limit within three months of having it. Bear in mind, I also had significant travel-related charges at this time as well, so it wasn't just purchases at Staples. Then a few months later, Chase instantly approved this card for an even higher limit.

I had my credit frozen, after applying I unfroze them and called application team at this number 8772600084, they ran my application again and said approved with in minutes. And expedited my card. I would recommend calling and talking to agent instead of automated message
How do you unfreeze your credit?

What do you do with $7000 worth of visa gift cards? Can you get a pin for those cards, use them as a debit card and buy money orders with them?

A "freeze" on your credit is something you do in order to prevent a fraudster from taking out credit in your name. You have to undo it so a credit card company can see your credit history.

Not too long ago (but not now), you could use them to buy MOs at Walmart. But they are limited to $99/swipe now. Formerly, I could buy $800 MOs, using four cards and paying $1 fee in cash. I've not yet tried to buy a WM MO recently.

Yes, they have PINs so you submitted them as a debit card transaction.

Regardless, use them as you would a normal CC. Suggestions:

Load up Amazon account
Pre-pay cell and other utility bills
They are good at Costco
etc.

You are getting (in my estimation) about $1500 worth of free travel, and the Companion Pass as well. Worth the trouble of using the VGCs in the short term.

Using a Chase Ink card, you get 5% back in points when you use it at Staples. Buy $1000 in cards, receive $50 in points on the card. Very hard to find such an attractive RoR.

I get that you are trying to be helpful, so thank you for that. However, your first two examples: Loading up on amazon and pre-paying cell/utilities...Why would you go through the hassle of getting pre-paid credit cards through staples, when you could put those purchases DIRECTLY on your Chase Southwest credit card?
