Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

Was that 25k offer only for 2021 ? I think it would get reset in Jan 2022 unless I missed something.
It rolls over into 2022. That is why folks upthread say spend less than $2K in 2021 unless your statement ending date is in 2022. Mine is 5 Jan, so I'm good.
When? For what? Why all these people in the thread apply for business CC then?
Ever hear of this Wuhan Flu stuff? The 25K points were to help folks during the Economic Shutdown.
The 100K in bonus points offer is now expired. The current offer is for 80K points on the Business card. Technically, this thread was on the personal card when the 100K bonus was valid.

They say spend less than $2k in 2021 so you don't get 50k points in 2021. If you get 50k in 2021, they won't count toward companion pass in 2022.
The rules are "To qualify, simply fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 125,000 qualifying points in a calendar year"
That 25k from 2021 are obviously not earned in 2022 calendar year.

When I log in, I see the 50000 from first $2000 but not the second 50k points. Is this what u guys see as well. I signed up on 12/07/21 at around 6:15 CST
Only the first $2000 will show up until you hit it. Then the $12000 bonus will track.
I agree. However, from your posts it appears that you seem to think that the 25K CP qualifying bonus provided in 2021 will roll over into 2022, so that you will only need 100,000 more points in 2022 to get the CP for 2022-2023. Not true.
You will need to earn the full 125K points in 2022 to qualify for the CP. So after spending $12K to earn the 100K bonus, you will need to spend $13K more to reach 125K points.

Any spend after December closing date, in my case 12/1 , will count towards 2022/2023 Companion Status.
My payment due date showed as Feb 2, 2022. Does it mean I can start spending $2k and it won't affect the plan to have the bonus accrued in 2022 and count towards the 2022/2023 companion status?

Same due date as my card. Closing date on first statement will be 5 Jan. According to info from another poster in this thread, you should be good to go. I certainly hope so, as I've already spent $5K this week.

I'm just curious. Do you still think that the 25K incentive will count toward the points you will need in 2022 for a 2022-2023 companion pass? If so, you're gonna be disappointed.
I called chase and they said the bonus doesn't depend on statement closing date. but start counting 4-6 weeks from the date the requirements are met?!? Is this just a misinformed rep? My statement closing date is the 5th of Jan but I already met my spending...

This is going to be my 4th consecutive companion pass and the bonus has always been posted on statement date or a day after, so far !
Hoping for some guidance here. Application submitted November 24. Not approved until December 2. First statement closing date will literally be January 1st. It's December 15. Can I now spend $2,000+ and the 50k point bonus will not post until 2022? Please and thanks.
