Thanks all for the advice around getting companion pass! Opted for the $149 card since it essentially pays for itself every year ($75 southwest credit and 7500 points annually).
Here's my plan for anyone who might benefit from it:
- Before 2022, spend UNDER $2000 (I'm aiming for $1800 to have a buffer) so that the 50,000 point bonus does not hit in this calendar year.
- In Jan (and before the 3 months from start of account) spend the remaining amount to get to $2000 for the first 50,000 bonus. (Total 50,000 points for 2022 towards 125,000 companion pass)
- SPEND LIKE CRAZY, to get the remaining of the 12k as quickly as possible. Second 50,000 point bonus hits after this. (Total 100,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- In the course of this, in 2022, should accrue at least 10k points from spending point accrual (110,000 points towards 125,000 companion pass)
- for the remaining $15k points needed, either refer someone to the card for 20,000 points, or just migrate more of my spending to this card.
The goal is to get to 125,000 points accrued in 2022, as soon as possible in the calendar year to secure companion pass for the remaining months of 2022 and through all of 2023.
Thanks all, and good luck!
Also offering free canceled flights!
For spending using credit card, you can have minimum federal taxes deducted at your income source/salary etc and pay estimated taxes every quarter using credit card. 1.96% credit card fee is well offset by credit card point value/benefits. I have been doing that since I started cc churning. Just an idea for churners!

My first statement closing date is 12/11/2021 with due date on 1/8/2022. I made purchases worth $868 + $150 annual fee totaling to $1018. I have a $1000 purchase to be made now. Should I use the card to make purchase or wait until January 1st? Greatly appreciate your help.
you should be good to go. And as mentioned, the annual fee doesn't count toward the bonus, so you will have a little more spending to do as well.
You just needed to go back one page in this thread.

Only the first $2000 will show up until you hit it. Then the $12000 bonus will track.
Where are you guys seeing the spend progress exactly? On Chase website I don't see it under account details or rewards dashboard. Confirmed that I was registered for the promotion though.
Even though I've read this thread, I want to make sure I did not make a mistake and spent too much... I received my card near the end of November. I managed to spend over $2000 already, but my first statement's closing date was Dec 17 with a balance of $920. Am I still okay with not hitting the $2000 for 2021?

What date did you spend/reach the $2,000? If I'm understanding things, reaching the $2k
prior to Dec 17th would place your first 50,000 points in the 2021 calendar year. The goal is to have all 100k hitting within the 2022 spend calendar so your companion pass is for (most of) 2022 and for 2023.

I didn't reach the 2000 until after Dec 17th so I think I'm good?
Applied and approved on 12/7. My payment due date is 2/3/22, but the statement end date was not indicated in my account so I presumed it is 1/6/22 based on previous comments. So it is safe to say that spending over $1800 now will go towards 2022?

That's the way I understand it. Do you show any rewards points on your SW Rewards account for the purchases made prior to Dec 17th?

I have a 12/22 statement date & a 01/19 due date. I made a $30 purchase two weeks prior to the statement closing date. Just checked my SW Rewards & 31 points posted to the SW account on 12/23.

That sounds like the 31 pts was applied to 2021. That would not count toward accumulating the companion points for 2022?

That's right. I just made a purchase to verify that the card was active & to figure out the timing of when the SW reward points would post to my account.
I think you're ok to go over the $2,000 spend limit. (Personally, I would wait 6 more days if I could. I'd hate to have 50,000 points land in the wrong year for some weird reason.)
My first due date is 1/12/2022 (after I had it moved). So I assume this: "If the payment is due on the 12th then the statement will always close on the 15th of the month beforehand." This means I'm clear to start spending like crazy to hit the msr now right?
I have spent $1000 so far. My first statement will close on Jan 2nd 2021. If I spend $11,000 more on Estimated Tax for 2021 before December will I get 100K after first statement closing? Or Should I spend $2000 and get 50,000 points in first statement, then spend additional $10,000 and get extra 50k in following statement to be safe?

I'm confident you are OK with whatever choice you make.
What I want to know is what service you use to add funds to your fed tax withholdings? Am trying to increase amount in order to max out i Bond purchase potential. I couldn't find a service with a fee less than two percent or so.
