The metal probe is much much much harder to pull out.
The stupid display keeps flipping around, upside down, sideways, right side up, it's annoying as heck.
There is no lanyard attached or any way to attach a lanyard.
While it reads as fast as old one, it seems to take longer to settle on a final temp.
This is a great example of the old saying, "the enemy of good is better."
I thought it was silly to spend more than $15 or $20 on a thermometer too, until I bought one.
That being said, for home users a Lavaworks Javelin would be just fine. Or a Thermoworks Pop.
If the price drops on the Mk iV it would really be considered a best buy as well. I'd love to see ~$50.

For those of you looking for a simple, cheaper thermometer, I highly recommend looking into the ThermoPop. It's from the same company and is also widely recommended. I used it until I picked up the MK4 and really liked it. The ThermoWorks Dots are also pretty convenient for reverse searing, and roasting in the oven.

My thermapen mk4 is still going strong after five years and I've used it hundreds of times. I've picked up thermapops as stocking stuffers and they're solid but it's not really close. I'd worry about the reviews from folks who don't like this as much as the mk4 but otherwise this is as big a sale as you're going to see on these.
