Yeah, no thanks.
Not if you're an existing customer. Maybe if you're new, but I did it with the Spire offer and this just now and no hard pulls either time.
Do I have to keep the $100 cash reward at Fidelity once I receive it?
Yes. While you don't need to keep your initial deposit of $50 in the new account for more than the qualification period, you must keep the $100 cash reward (minus any losses related to trading or market volatility, or margin debit balances) in the eligible account for a minimum of 90 calendar days starting from when you receive the reward.

Never opened an IRA before. But I'm in my early-40s and already maxed out my 401k contributions, so I guess this is a good time as any.
There is never a bad time to start an IRA. Usually if you have maxed out your 401k already, a ROTH would be your best bet if you qualify. If the levels of the market are making you nervous right now, you can always fund your account and keep it in cash or some other safe investment until you feel more comfortable. The best advantage of an IRA is it is self directed and you have a wide range of investment options. You have until tax filing date to fund for 2021 and you can fund for 2022 as soon as the first of the year.
Is a transfer from a linked external account considered a "deposit"?
It typically is considered a deposit. Even when you are required for your transfer to be a "direct deposit" you can make it work. It is best for your ACH to be a "push" onto your new account from the external account. That means link your new account from an external account and initiate your transfer from the external account. That way it usually appears at a deposit instead of a transfer. Of course YMMV depending on the institutions you are dealing with.

Yeah, I actually got a Roth IRA with Fidelity soon after I wrote that. I just got the $100 bonus the other day too!
I linked an external account, finally got a message it was NOT funded, and am now past the deadline.
I did get an email message as not funded though I linked external account and transferred $50. But 10 days later i was credited $100 as promo offer. please login and check if your $50 deposit shows as "Electronic Funds Transfer Received (Cash)". Good Luck

Thank you, I hadn't logged in after the not funded message, I will try that and hope for good luck!
I got the $100 bonus on the 3 accounts I created for my relatives a few days ago. I also got the bonus on my account after having to follow up with their CS reps because I never got the confirmation email
I'm thinking of encouraging my teen to open one of these accounts. He's 14. I don't see an age restriction. Alternatively, he could do the Fidelity Youth account which would make more sense, but it doesn't come with $100 (nice bonus for a teen). Thoughts?
