A higher MERV rating will make the filter more restrictive and add strain to you HVAC system. Depending on your blower type it will reduce flow/performance and/or increase the current draw from the blower using more electricity. Still I would prefer the tradeoff of slightly less performance from my HVAC system and gain whole home air filtration.

Are you inferring you were talking about Diesel #1/#2?

Premium/plus are terms typically used with gasoline.. The octane rating is a measure of the fuels resistance to detonating under compression. If your engine does not use the fuels capabilities with a high compression ratio or advancing timing, then it is wasted. Your owners manual will tell you what octane rating is required for proper operation, specified by the engineers who designed the engine.

Maybe true for cheap filters, but more expensive higher MERV rated filters have significantly more surface area and many more pleats to combat this problem.

Been using the 3M 1200 1" type going on 20 years or so. My HVAC is 30 years old this past month in Texas heat, set at 70 degrees cool. After reading these comments, I'm worried that I'm shorting the life of my HVAC system now...What's the normal expected life span of an HVAC system without using these higher efficiency filters?

If you are a landlord with a tenant in a property, DO NOT use these filters. They MUST be regularly changed as directed and will burn out your fan motor and compressor otherwise. Use these filters for your home, use cheap ones otherwise!

Don't 1" filters have to be changed out more often than 4" filters? I've been fine with changing out these filters once a year for the past few years.

I worked on HVAC systems for 15 years, this is not even remotely true. Higher MERV ratings do not stop air flow, they stop fine particles like pollen, dust, and pet dander. Modern HVAC systems work fine with high MERV ratings. The issue with any filter regardless of rating is when they become dirty - this is when it can put strain on a system.

These were $30 after coupon in my local Plano store in case anyone was wondering. Pretty sure there were 3 in a pack making them $10 per filter

If you look at the actual testing data it is not that clear cut. Increased MREV rating does not necessarily result in increased resistance.

See page 6 of the linked for actual filter testing data. MERV 13 filters of the same size tested ranged in pressure drop at 295fpm of 0.18 IWC to 0.37 IWC. That is a big difference.

And if you see page 5 the 3M filter labels do not even show an straight increase in resistance with increasing MERV ratings in their filter line.

You are lucky… AC systems in Texas typically last 10 to 15 years… although my mother has one that is going a lot longer than that (compressor only though but it is struggling)… but they don't make them like they used to… I think efficiency and cheapness is valued more than reliability nowadays.
