apparently the law is that if 1 "Serving" of whatever is <5cal you are allowed to call it "0 cal"....who knows why, you'd have to ask the politicians. according to USDA web site, generic yellow mustard has about 3.05cal per 5g serving. so 594 servings->1,812 cal. On the other hand, eating 6.5 lbs of mustard would probably make me lose my appetite for eating -anything- for quite a while, so that mustard diet may still have some promise! Wink
This is great for when I'm smoking ribs, brisket, or pork shoulder.

What chemicals? If you get a generic bottle of yellow mustard its ingredients are vinegar, salt, mustard seed, turmeric, and paprika.
You forget Natural Flavors. FDA says if you have 1% or more of something natural you can call it natural flavors and you do not have to disclose how many chemicals are it it. Aldi brand doesn't have Natural Flavors, which is really hard to find.

yup, basically legalized nutritional lying. never could figure out how they managed to get away with getting either of those "exceptions" in the law - neither has any rational, logical basis. Even for government that's pretty flagrant corruption. Someone got a biiiiig suitcase full of cash.

The way around the fake-0 trans-fat trick is that you have to look at the ingredient list for ingredients that are inherently transfatty, as you said, (ie the hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils or similar), but of course that requires that one knows that, which most don't, they assume zero is zero. And people don't like learning stuff. The really really hate learning. Cuts into the TV watching time. Sigh. https://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...lies/frown.gif
Yup. Actually stopped consuming a lot of Costco baked goods about 10-15yrs ago when I learned about trans-fats and noticed they had quite a bit. Not that I needed a 600cal, giant-ass muffin anyway--But damn those seasonal ones are tempting. Being born in the 80s though, I'm sure I've eaten my body-weight in trans-fat by the time I got out of high school.

Just to be clear, you are really, really overthinking this. Like to an extreme. If you really think that the amount of "chemicals" (here's a hint - everything you eat is a "chemical") in "natural flavor" is an issue in mustard, which you probably consume maybe 16oz of a year, well I hope you don't eat anything, anywhere, ever, that you don't grow in your own garden - but wait, are you sure that the soil you are using is free of heavy metals?
