Why buy a "refurbished" from Walmart when you can get a true refurbished direct from Apple for $20 more? The Apple one has a full warranty and you can buy AppleCare+ for it.

Because they are not the same model. The one being sold by Apple is the iPad Air 3 released in 2019 and the one being sold by Walmart is the iPad Air 4 released in 2020. Notice there is no home button on the front of the one sold by Walmart.
Holy crap this deal is back on! I just ordered 2x, a Sky Blue and Space Gray model. Based on the reviews, it seems these usually are brand new but warranty less than a year (These are likely units that were purchased and returned unopened, but the Apple warranty clock has already started ticking). And what the heck, its sold and shipped by Walmart and can be returned through Jan 26th so in for a gamble!

I'm in for a green one! I noticed it was OOS and then an hour later I refreshed and was in stock, so I'm hoping that this isnt one thats been passed around for weeks on end. in a perfect world, it would still have some time left on it to buy apple care imo!
I bought two "refurbished" iPad Airs (4th Gen) based upon all the positive reviews on Walmart.com and slickdeals.net. Many reviewers said they received gently used or seemingly unused iPads in their original boxes with their accessories. Well, I just received both today from Walmart and that was one heck of a strike out!
iPad Air #1 (Space Grey) came without a box, just the tablet slid into a bubble mailer w/ it's dirty USB-C cable and non-OEM USB-C charger rubber banded and thrown in a Ziplock bag. I pulled the iPad itself out and found it completely dead with a crappy "screen protector" tightly adhere across the panel and wrapped over the speaker ports. It was heavily scratched on all of its edges, with space grey coating scraped clean off, and also with a small dent in the back.
iPad Air #2 (Sky Blue) at least came in an Apple box but apparently had an identity crisis as it was actually last year's regular iPad model. This one at least came with Apple-OEM charging cable and charger, but you can buy this year's new regular model brand new right now for $100 less than this "refurb" costs. This one also had the ridiculous screen protector thingy that was adhered so tightly I could not even press down the home button (again, not an iPad Air as I ordered) and did not want to risk taking off for fear of ripping the button or glass panel off.
So, right back in the box and straight to FedEx for both of them for a refund from Walmart! I really hope they don't give me any grief getting my money back considering I am returning a box-less iPad Air and the wrong SKU iPad for $798 in all. I'll just wait for a better deal this fall or grab an Apple refurb next time - lesson learned!

That has me anxious for mine that's set to arrive on Monday. I wonder if the few we've seen come back in stock have been constant returns of the same few ipads since this deal originally went live.

I feel you! Yes I think both that I got had been around lol. I hope you have better luck than I did!
Well the story gets more interesting! So after having returned the busted iPad Air and incorrect regular iPad Walmart shipped me... This morning I get a Sky Blue iPad Air (in like new condition in its box no less!) from FedEx under the exact same tracking number I got the other two. So far I have now received 3 iPads but I only ordered two last week. I dunno what they're doing down there in Bentonville, but the first two were already shipped back under RMA for a full refund... So, I'm thinking I hold on to this guy for a while and see what the heck Walmart ends up doing. I'd be happy to just get the refund for one and keep this one (It was $399 after all, and its AppleCare is valid until Aug 2022!)... I'll be even happier if this one ends up free lol. I guess I'll update you guys if/when I hear back from them!

This is getting crazy for you.. If you're lucky they'll issue the refund for both returns and you'll walk away with a blue air for free I guess!
My green 64gb model just got here and I'm convinced it was a floor model or someone opened it, peeled off the film for the screen, then puti t back in the box. Not a single scratch on it or anything, and even when registering to my apple ID the warranty started on my purchase date, so I'm still able to purchase applecare on it until January 1st 2022. Very happy with my turnout!

Wow that's a great deal you got there! Glad to hear you got lucky! Oh yes that's exactly what I'm hoping occurs lol, but I'll at least be happy to get the $400 for the beat up one and keep this one for the price. Mine's AppleCare started in August, but other than that, the USB cable wrapped up with a bread tie and the tiniest little scuff on the Apple logo on the back, she's in Grade A condition at least! Of course nothing is slicker than a free iPad haha *Crosses fingers

So it seems the story has come to a close haha. Walmart refunded me $399 for the beat-to-hell Space Grey iPad Air and it still shows a pending return for the Sky Blue iPad Air that came in a few days after I began the return (Which I kept as it was in like new condition with a box and all!). They said nothing about the original iPad that I also returned that came with the first iPad Air. So I guess they are happy to get that "bonus" iPad back, that they erroneously shipped me, and I am happy to have a beautiful blue iPad Air for $200 off retail that still has 9 months of AppleCare on it. All in all a win, though not without a good deal of hassle... But to save $200 I think it was worth it!
