Does this requiere external power?
Yes. This is a desktop external drive. All of them require power.

Not sure about the availability of 18TB consumer drives this year, but the 18TB enterprise drives was a big seller to data centers this last quarter for WDC. My guess is that the 16TB will be on sale for $220~230 next.
The 16Tb at $240 would be just fine by me. Need 5 to replace my 5x8Tb DS1019+ array.

I really hate how BB puts one size on sale at a time. I need the 12TB size drives since my parity drives are 12's. But 12TB drives are more expensive than the 14s......
If you're using snapraid, and you want to be 100% sure - write a 2TB dummy file on the disks, which leaves 12TB free for snapraid to use.

I've done that in the past and it works fine. For the last couple of years (and this year), I'll replace my 3 x 12TB parity drives (from last BF) with these, and put the 12TB ones in as storage.

Some people may have a Best Buy cash back rebate on certain Citi credit cards. Can make this deal even slicker. YMMV. See this thread here:

My Chase IHG card has an offer for 10% cash back for Best Buy purchases and Chase Freedom has an offer for 5% cash back for Best Buy purchases.

So I have a 10% in store coupon from jump drive trade in deal. Should I reserve one of these at full price and do a return - rebuy w coupon if it drops lower? Just worried it won't drop or if it does, it won't be in stock in store.

In for two. Used 25 off 250 Amex offer with it. If they go lower I can return them. The Amex offer is not a one time use. You have to spend 250 by 12/15 so if I come across a better use for the offer before 12/15 I can adjust accordingly.

Also had the Amex offer, 25 back after spending 250. Bought 2 drives for 187.50 each plus my state has no sales tax. Good enough deal for me to bite now. Maybe I'll get some more if prices come down a little more around BF.

BestBuy had a Black Friday price guarantee. If it goes down before or on Black Friday, they'll refund the difference. Think it'll hit $179 by then?
It was $180 last year.

EDIT: Nevermind, checked my receipt, it was $190 last year.

From the Best Buy reviews on this drive people are stating that this is not an SMR drive. The latest review is from 1 month ago about SMR. Now did WD change something? Who knows until people start getting them.
You're right, WD could have changed something, especially with the sudden influx of inventory, it's possible they finally got around to making (at least some versions of) their 8TB+ drives SMR.

I'm guessing they didn't and these are still CMR/PMR, but I think it's important for people to realize that unless a person is using this specifically in a NAS, SMR is (generally) going to be a faster and more efficient drive for their purposes since the increased cache and SMR process is going to give them better performance 99.9% of the time.

I think SMR gets an unfairly bad rap, and that the effects in a NAS environment are overblown (or, rather, that the people who see actual impacts from SMR vs CMR are few and far between).

Yeah, folks said the same thing when the 12TB was $200 less than a week ago. I said I'd eat my hat if the 14TB didn't drop to $200 by/on BF/CM and here we are weeks out and it's already that cheap.

There's a surplus of these now that manufacturing has ramped back up and they will continue to drop in cost to pre-pandemic pricing, mark my words.

I'll eat my hat if it doesn't drop to $190 by/on BF/CM. You people don't understand basic supply and demand if you think $200 is a "good deal" with BF/CM right around the corner and a ton of inventory to move.
Proof or Ban! 😂
