Sweet! Been looking at TS-451D2 for a Plex server and to store my photos. The QuMagie app from QNAP looks pretty cool. Might just pull the trigger on this deal.👍🏽

According to Plex's compatibility list, this NAS supports hardware accelerated transcoding for 1080P. Not sure about 2160P but should be good enough for home media center.

skip qnap; they suck. UI is super clunky compared to synology. I purchased a qnap a while back to compare them, and regretted doing so.

Curious, why are we still transcoding media through Plex? Most of my devices either have native decoding support for popular formats, or Android based devices can have VLC or Kodi with software decoding for other formats. This allows media to be shared via a file share, rather than a heavy processing media server transcoding on the fly.

Anyway, regarding QNAP, I like it. I haven't tried Synology, bit has generally been more expensive. my last one died after maybe 7 years or use (maybe 5 years, can't remember the exact date), due to hardware issue. currently have the 253d, which is quad-core of this CPU, installed 16 GB RAM (over the max advertised of 8GB). Runs various docker based container apps (Minecraft server, pi hole for ad blocking, downloading via transmission+OpenVPN if ever needed). other built in stuff works like network share, S/FTP, has many other server type of applications like a domain/user server, syncing with cloud drives, web/app server, home assistant. I think this model, like mine, also has HDMI out to work as a PC/media player.

Upload bandwidth limited to a few Mbps or wanting multiple streams.

Here is a Google Doc link with all of the Plex transcoding capabilities for each NAS unit. This is pretty helpful and a good starting point, but it would be really nice have a calculator to say that you can do one 4K transcode stream or four 1080p transcode streams.

I've been waiting for a sale on a good NAS so I can finally stop paying monthly fees to store all my files. Looking forward to using it as a Plex server too

Reminds me really have to get a step on selling my upgraded Qnap TS-453BE since I have a 6 bay as my primary now. Just need to find the power supply for it.

here is a copy/paste from my post in another QNAP thread:

----------------------------------------------------------------
I've been a qnap person since my 1st NAS and prefer qnap over synology (though i do own NAS boxes by both companies). most who frequent the SD threads know i was extremely vocal about being pro-qnap. so i understand if some will want to throw that in my face after my below post, but so be it.....

after qnap's mishandling of qsnatch, and their latest firmware bugs with both QTS and HBS, with releases that just make things worse without making them better....

i wholeheartedly cannot recommend this company anymore. this is coming from someone who used to be pro-qnap quite vocally in SD threads

they seem uninterested in fixing the problems, some of which have been ongoing for literally years. i have to intentionally keep my servers on an older firmware, open to vulnerability, in order for it to function properly. unacceptable. before switching over to synology, i had to keep my QNAP servers on QTS 4.3 and HBS 2.1 just to maintain propery functionality. tech support was laughable, even they admitted they are fully aware of problems and have no plans to fix them.

sorry for thread crapping, but i need to warn people who are considering this. check out the qnap threads on reddit and on the community forum. the firmware revs over the last 2 yrs are wreaking unexplained and unpredictable havoc. QNAP tech was not only slow they were flat out MIA during covid (they were basically refusing to interact with customers over the phone, insisting on tickets which they would close randomly when they didn't feel like dealing with you despite the issue not being fixed). as a company they really don't seem to have any direction and don't care about their own product or their customers.
----------------------------------------------------------------

i wouldn't even touch these for $200 to use myself, i value my data and functionality more than this company clearly does

I need a 4 bay nas… I got my old phone QNAP TS-431 for $179… like 4 years ago.. the slightly upgraded version of that is now selling for over $400… it's plain ridiculous
And it's all because they don't sell the replacement pci to 4 sata expander by itself..
