I can't imagine owning a Garmin watch without a sapphire screen. I've abused the 5 Plus for over two years and the screen still looks like new.

Clicked on this deal out of curiosity, I'm looking for a smartwatch. So why are these Garmins so expensive compared to Samsung watches, for example? And no touchscreen? (and why is that good?) Thank you for any input!
Samsung watches (and other smartwatches) are not built or designed for the activities that a Garmin Fenix is. Also, the battery life is exceptional with the Fenix line. Sensors are great - basically, no comparison between the two. As for touchscreen, a watch like the Fenix, fitness focused, is not conducive to touchscreen since it is harder to control when wet, or with gloves in colder weather.

also research the screen display differences. if you're familiar with an Apple watch type display you may be surprised by what and why Garmin goes a different route.

The watch is so customizable I can't even begin to describe. Regarding the advantages of physical buttons to navigate during an activity, what will happen is you'll eventually memorize which buttons to click how many times to get to the screen you want without even looking down at the watch. Trying to do this with a touchscreen would just be a frustrating experience.

you would think that because there are so many smartwatches that came out in the last 7 or so years, that garmin prices would fall. but nope. garmin are still expensive AF

Garmin has cheaper smart watches. The fenix is their highest end line and honestly nothing can touch them for software, durability, screen usability in sunlight, and battery life.

I have a Garmin Venu 2S, and it seems like a toy compared to these watches.

I'm liking the Solar model.

There is a deal for a refurbished Fenix 5X plus Sapphire (ordered mine from there last month and it did look new to me) for $318.
I took advantage of this deal and had issues with my device (and multiple replacements), so Garmin upgraded me to a 6X Sapphire for no charge. Essentially ended up with a 6X Sapphire for $320

Had this for a couple of years by now. I made a small scratch to the non sapphire face. But it can withstand a lot of abuse. This is a big jump from the 5 specially on battery life. 2 weeks of battery makes it worth. Enabling pulse ox 24/7 will reduce battery life to 2 days

FYI Garmin Fenix 6 on sale for $350 at some retailers. I've been a 3HR user forever and briefly played around with Instinct which I gave as a gift. I really think I'm going Instinct Solar even though I'm a runner about to train for another half. Feels so good on wrist and visibility much better.
I actually use my Fenix for workouts and rides and the Instinct Solar as my daily driver. So much to love about the Instinct. Lighter on the wrist. Battery for days. Convenient to track informal workouts when I don't want to get geared up (HR monitor, RunPod, etc), HR tracking, PulseOx and more! If I hadn't found the Fenix first, I probably would only have an Instinct.

Please no. No touch screen.
Yeah not at the cost the buttons. I have a Vivoactive as a backup and no where near as good as tactile buttons! If it's just an addition I'm ok with it but definitely not if I lose buttons!

Far better tailored for working out where as on the Samsung smartwatches, workouts are an afterthought. These aren't smartwatches but rather dedicated fitness watches. You buy this when you want to seriously track your fitness activities. Like if you're a runner, swimmer or cyclist for example.
