Ace Hardware flyer arrived and they have some decent deals on small socket sets and wrench sets. I like to buy these types of sets for my kids for Christmas so they can build up a tool set every year. No, these are not what they used to be but they still carry a lifetime warranty. The prices shown are for Ace members -- each set is $9.99.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Metric was invented by scientists. SAE was invented by people who thought that having some pounds be twelve ounces and others sixteen was a fine idea.
SAE is Freedom and Metric is communist.
Got all the hand tools I'll need in this lifetime but repped just the same!

Yes, this Craftsman set is so small it's not very practical. If I was that poor and had no tools, I'd just go to Harbor Freight and buy a set with more pieces. The quality might be lower but at least the set would be more useable in the real wold.

I want the adapter to have a 1/2" drive(female end) and 3/8" drive on the male end. A photo with dimensions would help buyers.

Most brands are made in Taiwan or China. But I read awhile back that Stanley/BD which now owns the Craftsman brand is bringing manufacture back to the USA. Not sure if these are made in the USA yet or not.

which one of these does anyone recommend for a general purpose usage?

Metric is much more common in automotive

They sure are getting a lot of mileage out of that press release. But 4 years later and still no USA hand tools factory.

They can talk all they want, but I'll only believe it when I see it.

Just a heads up, I ordered one of each set and I received a black cased 1/4" SAE set when it was delivered. The red boxes of the socket sets are made in Taiwan and the black boxes are made in China.
red was metric and black was SAE at my local store.
they mixed up my order by handing me a SAE box, too. lady said the SKU listed on the online order as metric actually corresponds to the SAE set. took a return and rebuy to sort it out.
just checked and both sets are open boxes... one actually looks like it got used for something light, there's dirt on a couple of sockets. both were ziptied. i'm amazed they couldn't even wipe them down before restocking them on the shelf. the damn place had more employees in a small store than i see at a large home depot shake head

I really just needed a 1/4" ratchet to go along with my DeWalt SAE & Metric deep socket set ($18.69) :
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1
You can NOT get a Craftsman ratchet for $10, so really glad to find this.

There's a BONUS!!
The Craftsman set fits under the Deep Socket tray...
just pull the hinge pins out with your fingers and lid comes off .
Use a thicker sheet of foam to hold them together, since the Craftsman sockets fit loose in their tray.
There's still plenty of room for some larger sockets and extensions
I am very happy with this rig. Applause

For fun, I bought the ratchet set and wrench set. The ratchet set is made in Taiwan so that's a decent deal, but the wrench set are made in India... both the SAE and Metric wrench set. I bought them as stocking stuffers or as back up for my nicer brand tools. Not sure I like made in India tools...is this worse than made in china? This comment only deals with quality of the tool made.

LOL there is no such thing as too many tools! i find it cheaper to buy sets like this than to replace lost pieces individually, like that wandering 10mm socket! - and the ratchets are worth more than the price of the sets based on a quick look at their prices (even though they aren't an exact match to the ones in the set)

I have an unopened 200+ piece husky AND kobalt set - and craftsman pieces ALL OVER my garage so i kinda know what you mean, but still - a couple of these sets might wind up being delivered to the house! :-/

Mt wife thinks it's a sickness, or maybe some hoarding behavior, possibly Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder. My response is, "How many pairs of shoes is enough?" Besides all the hand tools, I bought a very large TIG Welder out of an aircraft plant out in the desert, large enough that I had to buy a phase converter since it's 3-phase ($300 couldn't beat the price for a water-cooled 350 amp welder, complete), a CNC milling machine, a lathe, surface grinder, belt sander, and a band saw. She might have a point .

Very nice set, bought the 3/8 SAE and 3/8 metric

Did get a bad set as the 1/2 socket was 1/4 sizeā€¦so will be heading to ACE to get a replacement

(I have one of those $15 100 set socket sets so this is a huge upgrade, the socket wrench is very heavy in comparison)
