It's a desktop i5 cpu. It should run circles against most of the laptop under 1000 on SD. It will be more expandable too.

eBay, dell precision T1700, look for the i7 equivalent xeon E3 1240 v3 or E3 1246 v3 processor or something like that. You get haswell 4th gen Intel. With the ability to upgrade the power supply albeit with a 24 pin to 12 pin adapter you can get on Amazon for this model and you can even case swap this thanks to harbin repairs adapters on ebay. There's videos on YouTube for dell Optiplex and precision computers. They are my go to cheap budget computer builds. I just got my dad a T1700 e3 1240v3 with ECC memory, and a k620 Quadro for 100$ 😳 and windows 10 comes standard already attached to these motherboards.

Another model you can find for a little more money is the dell precision 3620. It has 6th gen skylake and has an m.2 slot on the motherboard in addition to all the other things I mentioned but they're often a lot closer to 250-300$

What would be a recommendation then for something that could be built upon? Price/value based preferred.

There is no low-end 12th gen yet, unless you mean the 12600K.

I'd be interested if it was an i5-11400 at this price point. That gets a decent performance increase from 10400 as well as AV1 decode.

I think the PSU might be enough to sneak a GPU in there too. I see both 260 W and 360 W listed... do they just give you a random one?

I've got a microcenter nearby so a 5600g and mobo can be had for 250. 50 ps. 50 case. 40 256gb nvme ssd. 80 16gb ram... These are all off the top of my head so don't hold me to it

I am not talking huge expansion here. Obviously not for gaming. But if you wanted to increase memory, it can be done. If you want a bigger hard drive or second drive, that can be accomplished with less expensive 3.5 hard drives. Maybe even a file server or plex server with a mirrored HD. It's great and cheap home computer, who cares what the footprint is for a desktop home computer. Not like you are buying this for htpc. Parts for sff are more expensive and more limiting in general (yes, i have owned 2).
