Solid deal! Just keep in mind I believe this has a very small battery despite being 17", so expect bleh battery life especially since it isn't Ryzen either

Rare to see a 17" as cheap as $500, good deal for those that simply need a large laptop and arent looking for the absolute best performance or gaming

Seems solid and I'm very surprised the screen isn't trash at this price.

Does the backlight on the keyboard provide enough contrast for an elderly person with some vision problems?

probably not, the labels on the keys are gray printed on silver keys. not easy to see in a brighly lit room. I suspect the backlit keys will help slightly in a dark room but not so much in a bright room..

Tried the Crucial RAM configuration tool, but only HP-by4061cl shows up. It shows as 64GB max RAM. Does not show HP-by4061nr. The only difference I can see on HP site is that the cl version is configured with 256GB NVMe and 1TB 5400RPM drives . I would think that this HP-by4061cl would by the same as HP-by4061nr when it comes to RAM

Not a bad deal for a 17.3" new and with these specs. I still use my HP 17.3" from 4+ years ago and the big screen really helps me. The chassis looks similar to mine even after all this time. I can say for a fact that the backlit keyboard won't help much due to the low contrast between the silver keys and the white backlight. Needs to be in a dark location to be somewhat effective. Otherwise it has been a great desktop replacement without needing an external monitor. Never had any issues with my HP.

On Black Friday, Costco has this one for the same price ($499) https://www.costco.com/hp-17.3%22...94976.html
Which is better?
The Costco one has:
  • AMD Ryzen™ 5 5500U (6-Core) Processor
  • 12GB DDR4-3200MHz RAM
  • 1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Costco one seems to have bigger storage, but I'm not familiar with AMD Ryzen vs. i5.
Thoughts?? Should I wait until Black Friday?
